Chapter 54 Human Nature in the Apocalypse
“Don’t worry, I won’t do anything stupid.” David promised right away. “I absolutely won’t bring any trouble down on you.”
David talked a good game just then, but a little while later, he nearly went back on every word of it.
Their mountain wasn’t the tallest of the ones around, but it was the sturdiest, because when Leonel first arrived, he’d poured a serious amount of manpower and resources into reinforcing it every which way
It might as well have been a fortress.
The neighboring mountaintops didn’t even come close.
Battered by the Megastorm, they’d long since turned into a mess of gullies and ravines, without a single level patch of ground left.
So living on them was miserable.
Plenty of people had set their sights on Autumn and Leonel’s mountain, and one after another they paddled their boats over, trying to get close.
“Stop, all of you stop right there!” Leonel’s men blocked their way. “This mountain is ours. Outsiders aren’t allowed anywhere near it.”
A ragged but powerfully built man stood up and said, “Look, buddy, we’ve run out of options here. Take a look around, are any of these other mountaintops fit to live on? We’ve got a whole group of people, the old and the young, and we’ve got to find somewhere halfway stable to settle down. Don’t worry, we’re only staying a while. The second this water goes down, we’ll be gone for sure. We won’t bother you one bit.”
“No. Back off, or don’t blame me for what happens next.”
The man let out a cold laugh. “This mountain isn’t private property, is it? What gives you the right to be up there when we can’t? Everybody, on my order, break through their line and get up that mountain! Quick!”
With a rush, more than a dozen strapping young men sprang up, kitchen knives and machetes in hand, glaring at Leonel’s men with murder in their eyes.
Seeing the other side flash their weapons, Leonel’s men didn’t hesitate either. They spun around, whipped out their nail guns, and leveled them at the group.
A nail gun was nothing to scoff at when it came to doing damage.
And in times like these, with medicine and doctors so scarce, a wound like that wouldn’t be easy to treat.
Up on the slope, Autumn said to David. “You see that? This is human nature in the apocalypse. To survive, people will stop at nothing.”
David let out a silent sigh and said, “They’ve got it rough too.”
“Who doesn’t have it rough? Everyone’s just trying to stay alive.” Autumn gave a soft laugh. “In my previous life, I was even worse off than they are. Take a guess. How do you think I made it all the way to the end?”
David had no reply.
The standoff on the water dragged on.
Neither side was willing to give an inch.
Right then, a small, scrawny man sneaked around the group and slipped off to one side.
He was trying to attack the man on the outer edge.
Just as the blade glinting in his hand was about to reach that bodyguard, a gunshot rang out.
