Chapter 53 Watching the World Go Dark
Now was the last chance to pull everyone back in close.
Once the extreme cold set in, the people out there likely wouldn’t ever be able to make it back,
This was weather that could plunge all the way down to -148 F.
Setting foot outside meant certain death within minutes.
Today, for once, the TV in Leonel’s mess hall wasn’t playing a drama. Instead, it was showing live surveillance feeds from all over the world.
Watching one camera after another go dark, they knew that one place after another was falling.
An inexplicable heaviness settled over everyone’s hearts.
So much so that they’d all lost their appetite for the delicious food David had made.
On the screen, a town was still peaceful and quiet in the rain, with people in raincoats and under umbrellas hurrying along outside every now and then.
Suddenly, a roar drew the attention of the townspeople.
As one, they all turned to look toward the source of the noise, and in the next instant, every last face went white with terror.
Plenty of them screamed nonstop, scrambling around like chickens with their heads cut off, frantically searching for somewhere to hide.
But it was too late. It was all too late.
A wall of mud came pouring down like a raging flood, dragging along rocks and debris, dead branches and rotting wood, and all kinds of other junk.
Like a monster with its jaws thrown wide, it devoured the entire town bit by bit.
A young girl stood in the middle of the road in despair. She’d lost even the will to run, and could only watch, wide-eyed and terrified, as the mudslide struck her, swept her up, and made her vanish in an instant.
There wasn’t so much as a splash.
Just like that, she was gone from this world completely.
More and more people fled from their houses, but many more were swallowed by the mudslide.
In the span of a few short seconds, a town that had been the picture of peace was wiped out entirely, as if it had never existed at all.
The mood in the mess hall turned unbearably grim.
Someone cursed under his breath, though he didn’t even know who to curse.
Someone patted him on the shoulder and said. “I never used to get it why Mr. Wright sold off every last bit of his fortune and dragged us out to this godforsaken corner of the mountains. Now I finally understand. Mr. Wright saved all of our lives.”
The rain was still falling, but it had already grown lighter.
That brought a tiny sliver of hope to people trapped in a hopeless situation.
