Chapter 56 The Apple of Discord
The man across from them waved a hand, and David was hauled over, a total mess.
He was caked if mud and soaked through by the rain, looking like a drowned rat.
He didn’t even dare meet Autumn’s eyes. He could only huddle there, lost and helpless.
“We do this at the same time-your man for the food.” The man let go of David and kicked him forward.
David stumbled, kept his head down, and made his way over to Autumn.
Autumn took two steps back, let go of the man she’d pinned, and gave up the food.
The second David reached her side. Autumn’s fingers twitched, ready to snap the saber out of its sheath.
Leonel’s hand came down over the back of hers just in time. “Now’s not the time.”
Autumn turned to look at him.
Leonel lowered his voice. “Look, brute force is a sucker’s game. Winning hearts and minds-or better yet, breaking their spirit-that’s where the real money is. If we want this uninvited neighbor to stay in their lane and be a good little house pet, our best bet is to let them rip each other apart from the inside out.”
Autumn’s fingers loosened, and the saber, already four inches out, slid smoothly back in.
That group swaggered off with the food, bold as anything.
“Let’s head back.” Autumn said.
David opened his mouth, then shut it again, and trailed after her back to their hill like a scolded kid.
“Go take a bath first, then have some ginger tea to warm up.” Autumn glanced at David but didn’t lecture him. She only said, “I’m going to go find Leonel.”
With that, she turned and walked out.
David stared after her, so full of regret he couldn’t get out a single word.
If Autumn hadn’t gone to pull him out this time, he probably would’ve died in those people’s hands.
The moment Autumn got to Leonel’s cave, she dropped into a seat without ceremony. “So, what’s your brilliant idea?”
