Chapter 57 The Spoils and the Split
“Go, go, go!”
The second they heard food was involved, not a single person there could stay calm. They all stormed off. furious, to demand answers from Rex.
Leonel’s men stepped back, cold smiles on their faces, and settled in to enjoy the show.
Sure enough, the moment that mob found Rex, they saw the food piled high inside his tent, packed to bursting.
Their eyes went red on the spot, and they charged in howling, not giving Rex a single word of explanation before the fists started flying.
By the time the brawl burned out, a good chunk of that neatly stacked food had already been carried off.
Right then, Leonel’s men dropped another line, casual as anything. “You people are a mess. You don’t even have anyone in charge. Mr. Wright says you should pick someone with real authority first, then we’ll talk about working together down the line. Our supplies aren’t endless, after all. We can only back people who actually have what it takes.”
And with that, they got up and left.
The moment they were gone, everyone still on the hill was eyeing everyone else with murder on their faces.
Rex the honey-trapper, Zain at the head of his workers, Silas Wilson the gym owner-every one of them had their sights set on that food, and every one of them wanted it all.
Even the spineless townsfolk who always hid behind everyone else, right down to the dozen teachers, had their own hidden agendas written all over their faces.
It’s food.
Who wouldn’t want it?
The group had never been what you’d call harmonious to begin with, and this one thing tore it apart in a
heartbeat.
Late that night.
Corner One.
“Rex, what the hell are those people trying to pull?” someone demanded. “We got that food by grabbing the old man and trading for him. Why should we split it with anybody? The whole way here, it’s been every man for himself. Since when does what we earn get divided up even?”
Yeah Rex. Get over there and set them straight. This food, we earned it with our own hands, and every bit they grabbed, they give back!”
Rex said darkly, “We got played. I was wondering why they handed the food over so easily. Turns out this was the trap waiting for us the whole time.”
The woman from the honey trap leaned in, playing confused. “That’s outrageous! They’re the ones who agreed to the trade!”
