Chapter 70 Placing the Bet Early
Evander immediately called all the young women in the village over. “You’ve all seen how rich that hill next door is. Every one of you needs to step up and marry over there as fast as you can. Once you’re in, get a handle on their information and find a way to take that hill. With supplies like theirs, you can eat whatever you want and wear whatever you want!”
The dozen or so girls all wore the same determined look. “Yes, Chief Evander!”
“Take a page from Willa,” Evander said, pointing at her. “She’s the one with the most promise. That Killian over there is already completely wrapped around her finger. They even sent someone over just now to propose. The opening offer was 200 pounds of rice, 100 pounds of flour, and 100 pounds of charcoal!”
The dozen or so around her all looked at Willa with envy.
Willa couldn’t have looked prouder.
“That little bit of stuff, and they think they can marry me?” Willa said haughtily. “I don’t come that cheap.”
Evander nodded, well satisfied. “Exactly right! The girls in our village are top-notch, every last one. If they want to marry one of ours, they’d better bring real sincerity. Willa, go home and take care of yourself and the baby. I’ll make sure to land you the best price there is!”
“I trust you, Chief Evander!” Willa lifted her chin and strutted off, proud as could be, even though her belly wasn’t showing yet.
That same day, Willa’s treatment shot straight up. She got the most food, and the best of it.
The chief had ordered it personally.
With Willa as the shining example, the others threw themselves in even harder.
Sure enough, Evander sent word back to Leonel and Killian that the wedding gift showed no sincerity whatsoever, and Westfield Town would not agree to the marriage.
Leonel called Killian over. “What do you make of this?”
Killian folded his arms. “Willa really is pregnant, but that just proves I can still get a woman pregnant. If I can get Willa pregnant, I can get another woman pregnant too. If she knows how to act right, then keeping /her around for life is no trouble. If she doesn’t, I’ll just find someone else.”
Leonel jumped in at once. “Hey, hey, you can’t put it like that. It’s your kid, after all. We see it through to the end. I just didn’t expect Chief Evander’s appetite to be this big. He opens his mouth, and it’s 1,000 pounds of rice, 500 pounds of wheat, 2,000 pounds of coal, and 300 pounds of vegetables. It’s not that I can’t afford it, but once we crack that door open, if more of the guys later want to marry Westfield girls, the numbers pile up fast. That really would get hard to carry.”
Killian frowned. “Then maybe we just let it go.”
Leonel stopped him “How can we let it go? Absolutely not. Don’t stress about this. I’ll think of something.”
