Chapter 78 Convinced Beckett
Autumn pulled her hand back, invited Beckett to sit down, and handed him a cup of coffee.
Beckett only held the cup in his hands and didn’t drink. Instead, he got straight to the point. “I’m guessing you two already know why I’m here, right?”
Leonel and Autumn only smiled without answering.
“To be honest, I’m a simple man. I only like doing things the right way. I don’t like getting involved in schemes and power struggles. Otherwise, my family wouldn’t have sent me into the military in the first place. But with how things are now, I have no choice but to pick a side. I want to hear what you two think.”/ Beckett continued, “I always repay kindness. No matter what happens, I would never sell you two out.”
Only then did Leonel speak. “Actually, this isn’t something we should get involved in. But if you look at it another way, a country can’t be run with two people pulling in different directions. Just like a family can’t be divided between two leaders. We understand that much.”
“Yes.” Beckett nodded. “Karthmoor has completely lost contact with the higher-ups now. If the shelter here falls into chaos, millions of people will be in danger.
“To be honest. I’ve been trying to find a way out of Karthmoor since the day before yesterday. I’ve tried more than a dozen times, but every attempt failed. No vehicle can last more than two hours out there. I’ve tried every method I could think of, but nothing worked. It’s simply impossible. The situation in Jyncrest must be even worse than ours. Orders can’t get through, and the local governments have no one in charge. If this continues, riots are bound to happen.”
Autumn corrected him. “Not bound to happen. They’ve already happened. You know better than anyone why your soldiers died.”
During the early stages of the disasters, people still had some humanity left. They might steal supplies, but they wouldn’t go as far as killing someone.
But now, this was already the third wave of disasters. Almost everything that could be eaten or used has already been taken.
The supplies they had stored were almost gone.
Even those kind-hearted people had mostly died off.
The ones who survived weren’t the same anymore.
If there was even the slightest chance to stay alive, they didn’t care whether others starved or froze to death. They only cared about making sure they survived.
Beckett lowered his head sadly. “It’s been more than half a year. I don’t even know how I made it through these past months. I couldn’t just watch innocent people die, so I used my own supplies to help them. But I never expected this would be how they repaid us.”
As he spoke. Beckett’s voice started to choke with emotion. “I’ve had to harden myself just to keep going. Sometimes I have to look the other way. I have my soldiers to think about. Sometimes. I don’t even have the courage to face them anymore.
“When the higher-ups first sent us to provide disaster relief, they gave us money and supplies. We had everything we needed to help people. Later, they said supplies were running low and told us to figure it out ourselves. So I used my own supplies to help the civilians. But we need food and water too. I had tens of thousands of people depending on me. How was I supposed to find enough supplies on my own? I had no choice but to open the warehouses, and then someone reported me for it.
