Chapter 91 The Enemy at the Gates
Willa, the bride, walked proudly beside Killian, one hand resting on her pregnant belly, as they made the rounds and raised a glass at each table.
When they reached Leonel and Autumn’s table, Willa flashed Autumn a bright smile and said, “Asher, you really know how to turn heads. Half the women in Westfield are fighting over you! Come on, tell me. Which one caught your eye?”
Autumn replied, “None.”
Willa faltered for a beat, then recovered with a smile and said, “You don’t have to be shy. If you don’t want to say it in front of everyone, that’s fine. You can tell me later when we’re alone.”
Willa then turned to Leonel and said, “Thank you for putting all this together for us, Mr. Wright. I’d like to raise a glass to you.”
Leonel lifted his glass, took the smallest sip, and said pointedly, “You’re part of our community now. Keep your head down and stay out of trouble, and we’ll take care of you. If Killian eats, so do you.”
Willa forced a smile and said, “Of course.”
She flicked a glance at Evander, who answered with the faintest nod.
Zinnia, standing beside Evander, caught the signal and hurried over. She laughed lightly and said, “I’ll take care of the drinks.”
She filled a glass, gave Autumn a coy look, and held it out with a shy, hopeful smile.
That kind of flirting usually worked on men.
Unfortunately for Zinnia, Autumn’s androgynous style didn’t make her any less straight.
When Autumn didn’t reach for the glass, Zinnia’s smile tightened. She leaned closer and murmured, “Asher…”
The four teachers arrived at exactly the right moment. One of them took the glass from Zinnia and said, “Thanks. Sorry we’re late.” The others casually closed ranks around Autumn.
As the core team’s only woman and strongest fighter, Autumn had always been a favorite of theirs.
They stepped in as soon as they spotted Zinnia pestering her.
Kayla was the boldest of the four. She linked her arm through Autumn’s and said coyly. “I’m sorry. Don’t be mad at me My class ran late.”
Autumn reached over and pinched Kayla’s cheeks, which had finally filled out again. With an affectionate, teasing strule, she asked. “Hmm? So that’s your excuse for abandoning me?”
Kayla said sweetly Then I owe you three shots Will that make it up to you?”
Kayla was petite, barely five feet one.
In her knee-high boots, Autumn stood nearly five feet ten.
Despite the height difference, they looked surprisingly good together.
