"Chris, look! It's huge! Do Mom and Dad really live in here?" Ben asked, eyes wide.
"Ben, stop asking. We'll find out when we see them," Chris said, though he was equally baffled.
This place looked like a palace. Could their family really afford to live here?
When he was little, he had followed Amanda to the old Whelan family estate, and that house had seemed enormous, making him envious.
But there had never been a place for them there. This house before him was countless times larger than the ancestral home.
"Ben, Chris, Claire! You're back!" Amanda called out happily.
"Mom, what on earth is going on?"
Amanda explained the situation to them.
Ben grinned broadly. "So, we get to live in this big house from now on?"
"Yes, Ben," Elena said, watching Ben's childlike delight. She found it adorable.
"But... after all, Dylan gave this to Elena. We..." Chris still had reservations.
Elena turned to him. "Chris, what's mine is yours. We are a family, why be so distant? Do we not deserve a good life? The main branch of the Whelan family lives in luxury; we should live even better than they do!"
"She's right, Chris. Don't overthink it! The Whelan family has finally made it! We aren't the downtrodden family we used to be. I love it here; it feels like a dream," Claire chimed in.
Seeing everyone so happy, Chris didn't say anything more. It seemed he needed to work harder. He had already spoken with a few brothers on his team. Next year, they were going to strike out on their own. He was determined to build a successful career.
"Our only chance to turn things around is the Sinclair family!"
"But the Sinclairs have nothing to do with us anymore, do they?" Thomas asked.
"There is a connection. He was Emily's fiancé originally. Before, that little wretch Elena refused to switch the fiancés back. So, we'll go to her biological parents. We'll offer them two million! I don't believe they won't be tempted!"
"Will... will that work?" Thomas was unsure.
"Of course it will. They are so poor. Don't listen to what that brat said last time. I refuse to believe they'd turn down two million! Come with me right now. We're going to the Whelan family to talk!" Melissa was unwilling to let the Sterling family fall into ruin.
The couple drove straight to the rural northern suburbs.
"The roads here are terrible. If it weren't for Dylan, I wouldn't be caught dead in this hellhole! It reeks of poverty!" Melissa complained throughout the bumpy ride."
