“Get out! I don't need it! Get out! Both of you!” Dylan screamed, his voice raw.
Elena understood. Being trapped in a broken body would make anyone volatile.
“You're too loud. Can you shut up? In your current state, all your screaming doesn't stop you from being at my mercy.”
Dylan choked on his rage.
Just as he suspected—another woman here to humiliate him.
“Oh my god, it’s filthy in here. I have to clean this up!” Amanda, unable to stand the squalor, sprang into action.
“Mom, don't bother.”
“Don't bother?”
“No. I'm taking him with us. He’s not living well here.”
Elena’s simple declaration shocked both Amanda and Dylan.
When Elena had lifted the blanket, she saw the filth caked on the sheets. There were maggots breeding in the folds of the bedding. The nurse wasn't just lazy; she was abusive. That explained his rage and his fear.
“Elena... are you joking?” Amanda asked, recovering from the shock.
Their family was already struggling. Bringing a paralyzed stranger home...
“I’m not joking. Mom, go get a basin of hot water. I need to clean him up first.”
Dylan glared at Elena, his voice cold. “I don't need your pity. And you don't need to take me anywhere.”
“So, you’d prefer to rot here alone?”
Dylan laughed bitterly. “I don't want to live anyway. What does it matter if I rot?”
“That’s not up to you. From now on, your life... belongs to me.”
Amanda, a farm woman herself, felt her stomach turn. Yet Elena didn't flinch.
Amanda had to change the water several times.
“How long has it been since he was washed? What is that nurse doing out there?” Amanda muttered as she worked.
“Mom, check the closet. See if there are clean clothes.”
Amanda rummaged around and found a set. Together, they managed to dress him.
Once in clean clothes, Dylan felt a strange lightness return to his body. It felt... good.
“Why are you doing this? What’s your angle?” Dylan couldn't believe Elena was simply being kind.
“My goal is to save you. Otherwise, look at you—what could I possibly want from you? Your inability to bathe?”
