Reborn Fake Heiress Watch the Whole Family Burn novel Chapter 690

To Dylan's ears, this was nothing but irrational, defensive rambling.

Whatever. He had given up on expecting anything from her a long time ago.

"Since that's how it is, we have nothing left to discuss. From now on, whatever I do has absolutely nothing to do with you, and don't even think about trying to wring any benefits out of me. I don't care what grand schemes you're plotting for Patrick, but let me make one thing clear: if Patrick wants something, he'll have to earn it with his own two hands. I will never be his stepping stone, so banish the thought of using me!"

Having said his piece, Dylan turned on his heel and stormed out.

Amber stumbled backward, looking as though she might explode from pure rage.

"You ungrateful brat! You absolute bastard! Why did I ever give birth to him? Why! I should have drowned him when he was a baby. Then he wouldn't be here, pissing me off, giving me grief, and blocking Patrick's path!" Amber shrieked hysterically.

Dylan stormed out of the building, his face dark with anger. Elena was waiting for him outside.

"What happened? Did you get into another fight with your mother?" Elena asked gently.

"I'm used to it."

Elena reached out and took his hand, sending a wave of comforting warmth through his palm.

"Don't worry. You have me."

Dylan pulled Elena tightly into his embrace. "Elena, you're the only one I have left."

This was the second time Elena had felt the crushing weight of Dylan's loneliness.

The first time had been out in the northern countryside. The moment she laid eyes on him, she couldn't believe anyone could look so utterly desolate.

Even though he had put up a tough front back then, Elena had still sensed his profound isolation.

Why else would he have been abandoned in such a rundown, forgotten place?

This time, as he held her, the stark desolation in his eyes made her heart ache for him.

As they strolled through the old neighborhood, they noticed that everything looked exactly the same. Nothing had really changed.

The dilapidated brick walls alongside them were covered in creeping ivy. The old, weathered windows were still plastered with vintage posters of pop stars from the nineties, giving the whole area a distinctly retro vibe.

Even the streets weren't paved with modern asphalt, which only added to the feeling that time had simply forgotten this place.

Dylan held Elena's hand as they walked along the dusty paths.

This particular settlement was home to dozens of families. Exploring the whole thing on foot would easily take a long time.

"Look, right up there—that's the house you used to live in," Elena said, pointing toward a building just ahead.

The very first time she had laid eyes on a blind Dylan, it had been inside that exact house.

It seemed the house had changed hands; there were new tenants living there now. A woman was washing clothes right out front, and a little kid sat nearby, playing a game of cards.
