Across this border river lay Myantara.
This area was notoriously dangerous, and the water itself was filthy.
Debris floated on the murky surface, leaving the river largely devoid of fish.
Rumor had it that local villagers frequently spotted corpses drifting by.
It had become a grim, everyday reality for the locals.
Most of the bodies were dumped from the Myantara side, carried gently over by the current.
"Gunshot wounds. Looks like there was a firefight here a couple of days ago," Logan noted, scanning the surroundings.
"Boss, I found a boat. We can head straight across."
"Let's go," Elena said.
They boarded the small vessel. The river was only about forty feet wide, making for a quick crossing.
Stepping onto the opposite bank, they immediately spotted the sprawling concrete facilities.
"This entire zone is dedicated to scam syndicates. They say there are dozens of these compounds in Myantara, and this is just the tip of the iceberg. I just don't know where Theresa was taken."
They found a concealed spot to sit and began hacking into the local surveillance grids.
"Boss, I found her. Theresa should be in this compound," Logan said, pointing at the digital map on his screen.
Elena typed rapidly, attempting to breach that specific compound's network, but she hit a solid firewall.
"What's wrong, Boss?"
"Their system has a dedicated hacker blocking external access. It's a tough shell to crack."
"What do we do? It's highly dangerous in there. Eight out of ten people who enter end up tortured. Theresa is a sheltered heiress. I don't know how long she can hold out. We have to get her out now."
"Here's the plan. I'll go in and find her. You stay out here and keep working on their system. I have a tracker on me. We'll coordinate from the inside out."
Elena couldn't bear the thought of Theresa suffering alone. She had to get inside to protect her.
Marta chuckled inwardly. A fresh, clueless catch.
Luring someone into the syndicates here paid a handsome bounty.
Even snitching on escapees was a lucrative side hustle.
Marta led Elena down a series of winding roads until they reached a deserted alleyway.
"I thought we were going to the station," Elena asked, playing the fool. "This doesn't look like a station."
"You'll see soon enough, honey."
Suddenly, a man stepped out from the shadows, pressing the cold barrel of a gun to the back of Elena's head.
"Don't move!"
Elena stood perfectly still. She looked at Marta. "You tricked me."
"Little girl, do you have any idea what goes on around here?" Marta gloated. "Asking for directions in a place like this? You practically dug your own grave."
