A moment later, another man stepped out of the shadows and handed Marta a thick stack of cash.
Marta counted the bills, gave a satisfied nod, and walked away without a backward glance.
Hank turned his gun toward Elena. "If you know what's good for you, you'll come with us. We'll show you how to get rich. Resist, and you die right here."
"Alright, I'll listen to you," Elena said, playing along eagerly. "Show me how to get rich." She couldn't have asked for a better invitation.
She followed them directly into The Compound.
Before bringing her inside, they thoroughly patted her down.
They quickly noticed she didn't have a phone.
"Where's your phone?"
"I lost it."
"No passport or ID either?"
Elena shook her head. "Stolen by a pickpocket. That's why I was out of options."
Hank didn't push it. He waved a hand, signaling his men to take her downstairs.
"It's late, and the manager is off the clock. You bunk here tonight. We'll process you tomorrow." Hank shoved her into a dingy room.
He threw a uniform at her—shorts, a short-sleeved shirt, and a pair of cheap slippers, clearly designed for easy control.
The room held over twenty people, men and women crammed together, sleeping on thin mats scattered across the floor.
The one thing everyone in the room had in common was that not a single inch of them was unscathed.
Bruises marked their faces. Gashes lined their arms, necks, and thighs. Everyone was battered and broken.
Clutching her uniform, Elena spotted an empty spot and walked over.
The others watched her with dead, mournful eyes. They all seemed to be thinking the exact same thing: another victim claimed.
Elena scanned the room as she walked, searching for Theresa. There was no sign of her.
To run into an old enemy in a place like this was almost poetic.
Seeing Elena trapped in the same nightmare, a bitter, twisted smile touched Emily's battered face.
"What a coincidence, Elena. Fancy meeting you here. I never thought I'd see the day you got dragged down too."
"It is quite the coincidence. How did you end up here?"
During Elena's fierce battle with Sirius, she had been exhausted and vulnerable. Emily had found her and plotted to sell her to Myantara's organ harvesters.
Yet somehow, Emily had been the one dragged into the abyss.
"I got scammed. Some guy pretended to be filthy rich, bought me designer bags, and promised a romantic getaway. He drugged my drink. I woke up here and realized the bastard sold me."
Elena scoffed. "You've been played by so many men, and you still haven't learned your lesson?"
Emily snapped, her rage flaring. "Who do you think you are, lecturing me? If you hadn't stolen my life, I wouldn't be in this mess. You're a curse. You ruined me!"
