Theresa nodded, but the terror was still evident in her eyes.
She clung tightly to Elena's sleeve. "Elena... is this a dream? The water prison, the escape, the airstrike... it feels like a movie. I'm so scared I'll wake up and still be in that cage."
"It's not a dream. You're safe now. Just close your eyes and rest."
After comforting her friend, Elena stepped out into the quiet hallway.
Logan was leaning against the wall, waiting.
When he saw her, he immediately stood up straight, his mouth opening and closing as he struggled to find the right words.
"Spit it out, Logan," Elena sighed.
"Is she okay?"
"She'll be fine. Luckily, it's mostly superficial wounds. A few weeks of rest and she'll be back to normal."
A heavy weight of guilt settled over Logan.
Mr. Ellington had trusted him to keep Theresa safe, and he had failed miserably.
He had let her fall into the hands of human traffickers and endure unspeakable torment.
He dreaded the moment Victor Ellington found out; the man would be beside himself.
Beyond that, he couldn't forgive himself. If he had just insisted she get in the car that day, none of this would have happened.
Seeing her battered and broken in that compound had nearly torn him apart.
So what if she was a little spoiled and threw tantrums? She had every right to be.
"I've been thinking about something," Elena said, studying his face. "You mentioned that ever since Theresa got out of the hospital the first time, she was acting weird and constantly picking fights with you. I think I know why."
Logan looked confused. "Why?"
"Boss, aside from everything else, I'm terrified this is going to break her. She went through literal hell in that place. She's a sheltered heiress. What if the trauma is permanent?"
Elena offered a reassuring smile. "I worried about that too. But I know Theresa. She might have grown up with a silver spoon, but she's not fragile. She has an iron will. When they tried to force her to scam people, she absolutely refused. She took the beatings because she refused to compromise her morals. If she had just played along to buy time until we saved her, she wouldn't have suffered half as much. But she stayed true to herself. She's going to bounce back, just as fiery and vibrant as ever."
In many ways, Elena deeply admired Theresa.
They shared the same stubborn resilience. If Theresa had been trained, she would have made a phenomenal mercenary.
It was exactly why they were such good friends.
Logan let out a long breath, finally feeling a sliver of relief.
Once Elena walked away, Logan gathered his courage and pushed open the door to the hospital room.
Theresa looked up immediately. "Did you have something you wanted to say to me?"
