"Yeah," Logan replied softly.
"Me first," Theresa interjected. "I'm sorry, Logan. It's all my fault. I dragged you into this mess."
Having been around Theresa for a while, Logan knew she was fiercely proud.
The fact that she was swallowing her pride to apologize meant she had truly grown from the ordeal.
"I need to apologize too. I messed up," Logan said, stepping closer to the bed. "If I had just insisted you get in the car that day, none of this would have happened. Mr. Ellington trusted me to keep you safe, and I failed. I'm so sorry."
Looking at her lying pale and battered against the hospital pillows, Logan felt a deep respect for her. For a woman who had never known a day of hardship in her life, she had shown incredible grit.
Most people would have shattered completely or surrendered to the syndicate's demands.
The nightmare had only forged her into someone stronger, her mind resolute.
"There's something else you should know," Logan continued, his voice steady. "About me and Elena. She's my boss. We ran together for years overseas before I came back to Cresden City. We're comrades. Brothers-in-arms. There is absolutely nothing romantic between us."
"And I respect her more than anyone else in the world, because we survive the same way—living on the razor's edge. Do you understand what I'm saying?"
Theresa bit her lower lip, a wave of clarity washing over her.
"I do. I saw it today. The way you two fought side by side."
If Logan had told her this a week ago, she might not have grasped it.
But after facing death together, watching them storm a warlord's compound to pull her out of the fire, she finally understood the profound, unbreakable bond forged in combat.
She felt incredibly foolish for letting her petty jealousy blind her.
Though his words were scolding, his tone was dripping with absolute adoration.
"Well, you showed up, didn't you? By the way, where did you score that fighter jet? It was incredible. You'll have to let me take it for a spin sometime."
Dylan raised an eyebrow. "You know how to fly a fighter jet?"
"Of course. Don't underestimate me. Jets, tanks, armored transports—I can pilot them all."
"Is there anything my Elena can't do?"
Dylan genuinely felt like he had found the ultimate treasure. The heavens had truly blessed him.
"I don't own the jet, unfortunately. I had to borrow it from a local warlord. Myantara is a mess of competing factions. To pull this off, I had to call in some heavy local favors."
