"Did you have to make a trade with them?" Elena asked.
Warlords didn't hand over military assets like fighter jets without extracting a massive price.
"Just a business deal overseas. It's nothing you need to worry about," Dylan replied smoothly. "All that matters is that you're safe. We're secure for now, but taking out General Kaelen means we've put a target on our backs with his allies. As soon as Miss Ellington is stable enough, we're heading back to Aethelgard."
His gaze drifted back to the mottled purple and blue bruises marring her luminous skin, and a muscle ticked in his jaw.
"I'm going to find Warren Woods, and I'm going to make him pay for every mark on your body," Dylan vowed, his voice a low, lethal promise.
Anyone who dared lay a hand on his woman was as good as dead.
During the chaos of the airstrike, Manager Woods had slipped away. Dylan already had a team hunting him down.
"Do you know anything about his background?" Elena asked.
"George ran a full background check. Woods is originally from Aethelgard. He's actually a wanted fugitive back home. Twenty years ago, his father was a construction worker who was beaten to death by a wealthy socialite over a petty dispute. Woods took him to court, but the judge ruled it as self-defense, and Woods didn't get a dime. He tried to protest, but the guy paid off thugs to intercept him and beat him within an inch of his life. Everyone was bought off; no one would help him."
"Eventually, Woods snapped. He tracked the guy down and murdered him. To escape the police, he smuggled himself across the border into Myantara. He started at the bottom of the scam syndicates, but his deep-seated hatred for his own countrymen made his numbers skyrocket. He trafficked countless people. Over two decades, his bosses recognized his potential and promoted him until he was running the entire compound."
"So that's what he meant when he said he was 'forced' into this life," Elena murmured, the pieces finally clicking into place.
"I don't care if he was forced or not," Dylan said coldly. "All I know is that he put his hands on you, and I am going to make him answer for it."
Seeing the fierce, unwavering protection in his eyes made Elena's chest tighten with warmth.
In the distance, plumes of smoke still rose from the ruins they had obliterated that morning.
"This place is an absolute nightmare. What happened to the captives we freed?" Elena asked.
"Don't worry, George is handling it. He's escorting them to the border and coordinating with local authorities to get them safely back to Aethelgard. They should be crossing over right about now."
Elena thought of the desperate, pleading eyes of the people she had saved.
Her gaze swept over the horizon. "There are so many more out there. Thousands of people locked in cages."
"There are too many compounds, Elena. We don't have the infinite resources to save everyone. Taking down one entire compound and extracting hundreds of people is already a miracle. The world is full of suffering, and we can't save them all. Don't carry that weight on your shoulders," Dylan comforted her.
