While everyone was wondering where she was, Cathy walked in.
"If you ask me, Jane is probably too terrified to show her face!" Cathy said, clearly enjoying the drama.
"Cathy, how do you know?" Maggie asked.
"Because I was there today. I saw Jane cause the accident with my own eyes, and I saw her talk back to Miss Sinclair! The fact that the Sinclair family showed up at our door is entirely her doing. I told you she wasn't suited for high-society parties, but you insisted she go. Now our entire family is saddled with this massive debt for absolutely no reason."
Furious, Lauren demanded, "If you were there, why didn't you stop her? You're older than her, you're practically her sister! You just stood there and watched her make a mess?"
Cathy crossed her arms and scoffed. "I tried to warn her. But Jane was acting all high and mighty. She actually told me not to cause any trouble or embarrass the family. Turns out she's great at lecturing others but completely oblivious to her own actions. She ran right into the Sinclair heiress. What was I supposed to do about it?"
Jane's parents were completely speechless.
Old Mrs. Whelan slammed her cane. "Call Jane right now. Tell her to get back here and explain exactly what happened."
Lauren flinched and hurriedly dialed Jane's number.
When Jane answered the phone, she was still outside.
She was huddled in a corner, completely helpless.
After leaving the party, she didn't dare go home.
She knew exactly what was waiting for her.
For years, she had worked tirelessly to mold herself into the perfect socialite, striving to be Grandma's favorite.
But in the end, she was still looked down upon and publicly humiliated.
Her pride was shattered.
"Jane, why aren't you home yet? We have a massive problem! Someone from the Sinclair family came by and said you ruined Miss Sinclair's dress at the party. They're demanding compensation. Your grandma wants you back here right now to explain yourself..."
Lauren rambled in a panic.
Fighting back tears, Jane gave a hollow reply. "I know."
She had to face the music.
"Mr. Maddox, I'm sorry, she insisted on coming in..." Lane looked at Sean.
"You can leave!"
Lane stepped out, and Jane rushed forward.
Sean was holding a small stone, gripping it tightly in his hand.
"Miss Whelan, you look frantic. What exactly do you need? It had better be about work," Sean said, a distinct warning in his tone.
Jane rubbed her fingers together anxiously. She had no other options; she had to rely on Sean.
She was going to risk it all!
She was betting that she was special to Sean, that he had feelings for her.
Why else would he have promoted her, a complete rookie, out of all those candidates to be his personal assistant?
She was just a newcomer after all!
