"I had some things to take care of at home recently. Now that they're settled, I'm back."
Rachel Ward sneered. "Do you think this company is your own home? You think you can just come and go as you please?"
Theresa thought to herself, *It literally is my home.*
With a cold scoff, Rachel spun on her heel and marched into the manager's office.
"Manager," she complained, "didn't Theresa Graham quit a while ago? Why is she back today? According to company policy, an employee like her should be written up for absenteeism and fired!"
The manager sighed. "Ms. Ward, I have no idea. I thought she was gone for good too, but who knew she'd be so stubborn? The problem is, I reported it to the higher-ups, and they refused to terminate her. Without the official paperwork, we can't let her go."
"Wait... does she have connections?" Rachel suddenly realized.
"Probably. I've been thinking about this a lot. She might be the daughter of some executive, just here for an internship. But someone clearly doesn't like her and wants her gone, which is why we were told to pull some strings behind the scenes."
Rachel's heart skipped a beat. "What? She has connections? What if she retaliates for how I treated her before?"
The manager waved a hand dismissively. "Relax. No matter how big her backing is, it can't top the Ellingtons. The orders to squeeze her out came from someone in the Ellington family, and they own this entire company. Who could possibly overpower them? Anyway, just hurry up and make her quit so she stops showing up."
"Understood. I'll do my best."
Rachel felt a headache coming on.
But for the sake of her own career, she had no choice but to keep making Theresa's life miserable.
She walked back out and dumped a massive stack of documents onto Theresa's desk.
"Theresa, sort out all the files from the past two weeks. Also, I need a new sales proposal drafted by the end of the day."
Theresa replied smoothly, "Got it, Ms. Ward."
She knew Rachel was intentionally making things difficult, but she didn't care. After surviving the life-or-death crisis in Myantara, she had been through much worse.
This minor office bullying was nothing.
Everyone knew LUMEN garments started in the millions of dollars.
A single dress of Lorna's was worth more than their entire lifetime of earnings!
"Ugh, I'm literally crying with jealousy! We could work our whole lives and never afford a single piece of her clothing. It's so unfair."
"What can you do? Some people are just born at the finish line."
"Lorna, can I touch the fabric? I've never felt a million-dollar dress before!"
Lorna was quickly surrounded by a swarm of eager flatterers.
"Sure, go ahead," Lorna said with sweet understanding.
Seeing everyone revolve around her like the sun filled her with an immense, intoxicating sense of satisfaction.
