Theresa had been fully focused on her work, having absolutely no interest in Lorna's vanity show.
But when she casually glanced up, something caught her eye.
That dress looked awfully familiar.
In fact, she owned one exactly like it.
Theresa had an endless wardrobe, so vast she couldn't keep track of everything she owned.
But this particular dress stood out in her memory.
Her mother had bought it for her birthday, and she had absolutely adored it.
Back then, she had been playing in the garden while wearing it and accidentally snagged the fabric, leaving a nasty tear.
It had broken her heart.
To save the dress, she had taken a handful of diamonds and had them sewn over the rip, which surprisingly turned out to be a stunning finishing touch.
But since she constantly cycled through new clothes every year, she would have completely forgotten about the dress if Lorna hadn't worn it today.
*That's strange. Mom said that dress was a custom piece, one of a kind. How could Lorna have it? Is it a knockoff?* Theresa murmured to herself.
She felt deeply perplexed.
But as she squinted at the fabric, it didn't look like a fake.
Having worn designer labels her entire life, Theresa could spot a counterfeit from a mile away.
"Oh my god! Lorna, your dress... it actually has diamonds on it!"
"Let me count them... there are sixteen! Just one of these must be worth a fortune!"
"Wow, poverty has truly limited my imagination."
The crowd erupted into another chorus of awe.
Theresa immediately stood up.
She pushed her way through the gaggle of coworkers and grabbed the hem of Lorna's dress.
Examining the diamonds up close, she was stunned.
It really was her dress!
Riiiip.
In the midst of their struggle, the delicate fabric suddenly split down the seam!
Charles yanked his hands back like he had been burned and immediately pointed an accusing finger at Theresa. "Theresa, you have some nerve! You just ripped Lorna's dress. Do you have any idea how much that costs?"
"I didn't rip it! You came over and yanked it, and that's why it tore!" she shot back.
"Who else could it be? I was just trying to help Lorna, but who knew you'd intentionally destroy it. Everyone saw how crazy you were acting just now, so how am I wrong? Look, even if you're a clueless peasant who can't afford nice things, you don't have to destroy other people's property!" Charles intentionally riled up the crowd.
Everyone had indeed seen Theresa aggressively grab the dress moments prior.
Lorna's eyes welled up with tears, and she put on a picture-perfect expression of devastation. "My dress... oh my god!"
"Don't cry, Lorna. Make her pay for it!"
"Yeah, that was so rude. She was just jealous of how good you looked, so she destroyed it!"
"Theresa is dead meat. She'll have to declare bankruptcy just to pay for a fraction of that dress."
"Even if she liquidates everything she owns, she still won't be able to afford it!"
