Charles Pembroke pointed a finger at Theresa. "Theresa, remember what you said today. The second I take my rightful place at the top, my first order of business will be firing you. I’ll make you beg for mercy!"
Theresa couldn’t hold back a burst of laughter. "That is absolutely hilarious!"
"Charles, does taking your 'rightful place' mean marrying into the Ellington family?" she mocked. "You really are shameless when it comes to living off a woman. Let me tell you, you're completely delusional! Just wait and see."
"Keep running that sharp tongue of yours," Charles sneered. "We'll see who's laughing in the end."
Charles had been strutting around the office for days. Believing he was on the verge of becoming the Ellington son-in-law, many of his colleagues had secretly started kissing up to him. He was treated to free lunches daily, completely inflating his ego.
He truly thought he was a big shot.
Not long after, his phone buzzed. It was Lorna Avery.
"Lorna, why haven't you been at work?" Charles asked, a hint of impatience in his voice. He had been so busy networking and socializing that he’d practically forgotten about her.
"Charles..." Lorna sobbed through the receiver, the sound of her heartbreak echoing in his ear.
Hearing her tears, his tone instantly softened. "Lorna, talk to me. What happened? Why are you crying? You’re breaking my heart."
"I... I ran away from home," she wept.
"What? Why would you run away? Where are you right now? I'm coming to get you!"
Lorna gave him the name of a hotel, admitting she had been holed up there for days. Dropping everything at work, Charles immediately took the afternoon off and rushed over.
The moment she opened the hotel room door, Lorna threw herself into his arms. Since fleeing the Ellington estate, she had been too ashamed to return and had nowhere else to go. After days of suffocating loneliness, Charles was the only person she could turn to.
