"Take a flight to Falveria. I'll be waiting for you. If you ever want to see her alive again, you will come alone."
The line went dead.
Elena gripped her phone, her knuckles turning white. She knew exactly what this was. Sirius was using Michelle as bait to get to her.
Falveria was Sirius's stronghold, crawling with his mercenary factions. Even if she brought backup, it would be useless—they would spot her approach miles away.
Thinking of her fallen friend, Elena knew she had no choice. She booked a ticket to Falveria.
Michelle was the only family her friend had left in this world. She had to keep her alive.
—
A secluded wine estate in Falveria.
Elena kept her departure a secret from the team and flew directly to the coordinates Sirius had provided. The estate was heavily guarded. Elena mentally prepared herself; today was going to be an absolute bloodbath.
At the gates, the guards thoroughly searched her, stripping her of her firearms and concealed blades.
Sirius was waiting for her inside.
"Sirius. Where is Michelle?"
Sirius looked her up and down, amused. "You actually came. You've always been recklessly brave. Risking your life twice for a nobody? I believe you almost died for her the last time, too."
"She matters to me. Where is she? I'll trade my life for hers."
Sirius clapped his hands lazily. Instantly, dozens of elite mercenaries flooded into the courtyard, completely surrounding Elena.
"If you can survive them, I'll let you see her."
Elena scanned the crowd and locked eyes with Drake. He was the man who had conspired with Lucas Maddox during the previous attack. She knew exactly how lethal Drake was.
Sirius had pulled out all the stops to ensure she wouldn't leave this estate alive.
"Sirius, using this many men to take down one woman. Don't you find that a little pathetic?" Elena asked coolly.
Because she was fending off a dozen attackers at once, Drake found an opening and slammed a heavy, driving blow into her ribs., sending her staggering backward.
A suffocating wave of pain radiated through her chest. Drake was trained in martial arts; his strikes packed enough force to shatter bone.
Elena tightened her grip on the blood-slicked dagger and shifted her footwork.
In a blistering counterattack, she moved faster than the eye could track and buried her dagger deep into Drake's chest.
"That's for last time," Elena whispered coldly, ripping the blade free in one fluid motion.
Drake collapsed dead onto the cobblestones.
When Elena aimed, she never missed a vital organ.
A sharp tearing sound echoed as a machete sliced through her clothes. Elena had dodged just in time, keeping the wound shallow, but blood immediately began pouring down her arm.
Seeing her wounded, Sirius casually waved his hand, sending in the third wave of fighters.
