Exhaustion began to drag at her muscles. She sustained several more brutal cuts across her arms and legs, but her fingers remained locked in a death grip around the hilt of the dagger.
It was her only lifeline. If she dropped it, she was dead.
A heavy boot caught her in the stomach, sending her crashing hard against the ground.
Her entire body pulsed with agonizing pain. She paused for a fraction of a second to catch her breath, then forced herself back to her feet.
She lunged back into the fight, systematically cutting down the remaining men.
Before long, the courtyard was littered with bodies. Some were groaning in pools of blood, while others were already dead.
Elena stood among them, completely drained, her body covered in bleeding wounds.
"Does this mean I pass? Let me see Michelle, or I swear to God I will kill you," Elena demanded, her voice rasping but firm.
She stood tall against the wind, blood dripping from her fingertips, looking every bit the legendary warrior she was.
"Impressive. Truly," Sirius clapped slowly. "It's been a while, but your skills are sharper than ever. Michelle is inside. Go on in."
Elena knew there was no walking away from this today. Sirius was never going to let her leave alive. She was already severely wounded and running on empty.
Her plan was simple: trade herself so Michelle could walk free. Even if she died here, Michelle had to survive.
Elena pushed open the heavy wooden doors and saw Michelle tied to a chair in the center of the room, a gag stuffed in her mouth.
"Michelle!"
Elena rushed forward, quickly slicing through the thick ropes binding Michelle's wrists and ankles.
As soon as the ropes fell away, Michelle threw her arms around Elena in a tight embrace.
"Michelle, I'm so sorry it took me so long. Don't worry, no matter what happens today, I'm going to get you out of here safely..."
"Of course it's not just that! I'm getting justice for my brother! My brother died because of you, didn't he?!"
Elena's pupils dilated in shock. "You... you know about your brother?"
"Of course I know! He died because of your stupid syndicate! Why shouldn't I kill you? He bled for you, and what did my mother and I get? We got bullied by our extended family. We were treated like trash by our neighbors. We lived in poverty with no man in the house to protect us. Why?!"
"Why does everyone revolve around you, while my mother and I spent our lives drowning in grief because we lost him? This is all your fault, Elena!"
Elena weakly turned her head toward the doorway, where Sirius was casually leaning against the frame.
"You told her, didn't you? You found out she was his sister."
Sirius smiled. "Well, if you can dig up her files, why wouldn't I be able to do the same?"
Elena's mind raced, suddenly connecting the dots. "No. You knew long before I did. You found out she was his sister ages ago. That's why you kidnapped Claire and Michelle when you came to Cresden City!"
