"But Madam Scarlett, I've been bedridden for half a month. I know what I’m capable of. I just need some fresh air."
With a grunt of effort, Elena forced herself up from the mattress.
But her limbs felt like wet paper. She instantly collapsed back onto the sheets.
"See? I told you that you haven't recovered. You wouldn't listen," Scarlett said, tutting softly as she tucked the blankets back around Elena. "You can barely even get out of bed. How do you expect to go outside? Be a good girl and stay put."
Scarlett turned to Nurse Gretchen, her eyes turning as cold and hard as flint. "Watch Miss Whelan closely. If anything happens to her, I will personally see to your ruin."
"Understood," Gretchen nodded rigidly.
"Rest well, Elena. I'll be going now."
Scarlett swept out of the room, leaving Elena alone with the stony-faced nurse.
A sickening dread began to pool in Elena's stomach.
She scrutinized the room for the first time. There were no windows.
Not a single window.
What kind of hospital room didn't have windows?
Was she even in a hospital?
She closed her eyes, rapidly analyzing the last few weeks. Scarlett's behavior was a flawless performance. She wasn't the benevolent matriarch she pretended to be.
Gretchen stood watch for a while, but seeing Elena seemingly asleep, she finally stepped out into the hall.
The second the door clicked shut, Elena forced herself toward the edge of the bed. Her body was utterly devoid of strength.
She failed to catch herself.
After several agonizing attempts, she simply rolled off the mattress and crashed onto the floor.
Ah!
The impact yanked at her healing stab wounds, sending a flare of sharp pain through her torso.
She stared at her trembling hands, her mind racing. This was completely unnatural. Even with severe blood loss, she shouldn't be entirely stripped of her motor functions. She couldn't even grip a coffee cup. Her stab wounds were scarred over. She should have been able to walk weeks ago.
Elena's blood ran cold.
She was a hostage.
But why? What was Scarlett's ultimate endgame?
Scarlett had been playing her like a puppet for weeks, and Elena had only just noticed the strings.
"I want to go outside. Let me out, right now! Do you hear me?!" Elena snarled at the nurse.
"Save your breath! If I let you out, I'm a dead woman. Go to sleep!" Gretchen snapped coldly, marching out of the room.
Elena lay staring at the ceiling, her mind violently trying to piece the puzzle together.
If Scarlett had gone through the trouble of saving her life in Falveria, why lock her in a windowless cell?
In the brief second the door had opened, Elena had caught a glimpse of the hallway. This wasn't a hospital. It was a private luxury villa.
From the very beginning, Scarlett had orchestrated her abduction and brought her to this black site.
