Hope
“I’m not a nurse,” I snap.
Papa just chuckles. “You’re his guide. His liaison. It’s not permanent, sweetheart.”
“I don’t want to be near him. I’ve already taken him around the pack and now I’m going to bring him to Emma’s for his first session. He’s not a pup, he’s a grown male. An Alpha. I’m sure he can make his way.”
Papa’s smile dims as he studies me. “It’s not about what you want, Hope. It’s about what the pack needs. Be polite. Be hospitable plus I have a feeling the Alpha is keen on you.”
“Papa!” I say, outraged.
“I’m just putting it out there. Being nice wouldn’t hurt for pack relations regardless.”
I grit my teeth and walk out before I say something I’ll regret.
Internally my stomach plummets. Papa knows something or at the very least he suspects it.
He can sense our mate’s desires for us, my wolf said.
Ugh. Why can’t he just go home?
Sickness, my wolf reminded me.
That’s right. The mysterious illness he’s seeing Emma for.
A mist of awareness coats my body as I make my way to Keith and Jace’s rooms. As much as I want nothing to do with him, I don’t want to see him harmed.
I knock on Kieth’s door, then on Jace’s.
Keith’s door opens and his scent wraps around me like my own personal temptation. This is what it feels like to battle with an addiction.
He towers over me and the female parts of my body respond to his powerful body and the dominance he exudes.
He’s bad for me.
I know it, yet some part of me can’t help wanting to reach for him.
I curl my hands at my sides.

“Good morning, Hope.” My name is said like a caress and I have to fight the shudder that rolls down my spine.
“Keith,” I responded shortly, turning to Jace’s door.
I jump when Kieth breath tickles my ear. “Jace had to take care of something this morning so it looks like it will just be the two of us.”
“How convenient,” I mutter, whipping around to face him.
He smiles like he’s won some sort of prize.
“Are you suggesting I sent Jace away purposely?”
I move around him and start walking down the hall. He follows at my heels.
“Who me?” I say with fake politeness. “I would never insinuate that you suggested your beta find somewhere else to be so you can have more time alone with me in your quest to make
me believe I am your mate.”
We exit the main building and start walking down the path to the healing building. I set a brutal pace but Kieth’s long legs give him the advantage of catching up to me easily.
“Not believe. Accept.” He insists. “The fact that you’re parading that male around as your pretend boyfriend let me know you feel it, even if you won’t admit it.”
I stop in my tracks, facing him. “What did you say?”
He leans into my personal space, his nostrils flaring as he scents the air. My instincts want me to titt my head,to submit and give him access to my neck in a way that still feels as natural as breathing.
“I know your lying Hope. There is no you and Ben.” His nose is inches from mine. “No need to tell me you feel the bond, I can see it in your eyes.”
“I think you’re mistaken what you see for mild annoyance.”
I power walk ahead trying to get as much space between us as possible.
He laughed. “Keep running, Hope. I love the chase.”
When we reach the healing build I take him to Emma’s private room.
“Alpha Keith, so glad to see you,” she says with a bright smile.
“Please, call me Keith,” he says.
“Okay Keith,” she waves her hand towards the patient chair in the center of the room. “Come in and have a seat.” Emma turned to me. “Thank you for escorting him dear. You can wait in
2/3
the lobby until he’s done.”
