24.Your Alpha nature–1

This is the first time I’ve admitted it out loud.

Tessa’s jaw drops. Then her brows pull together in confusion as she looks to Ben for answers. “I don’t understand.”

“She got spooked.” He pauses, His eyes flick to me before he lets out a breath. “Wanna take a seat. We’re starting to draw attention.”

I glance around the tavern, and yeah, people are starting to stare. I can feel heat on the back of my neck

from their nosiness.

Tessa notices it too. She nods and reaches behind her to drag a chair from the next table. It scrapes

loudly against the wooden floor as she brings it to me.

“Thanks.”

“Don’t thank me yet. We’ll see where I stand when I have all the facts.”

She sits down again, arms crossed, eyes sharp.

I take my seat as well and wait for Ben to speak

Ben doesn’t waste time. He leans in, resting his elbows on the table, voice low but steady.

“Hope came to me,” he starts. “She was nervous. Scared, actually.”

“Of what?” I ask.

My wolf and Lycan sit up, paying unusual amounts of attention to what the male is saying.

He looks at me directly. “The possibility that you’re her faded mate.”

1 tense. My jaw tightens.

Why would she be afraid of me?

Tessa doesn’t move, just watches like a sentinel.

Ben continues. “She didn’t know how to feel about it…about you.”

I scoff, scrunching my brows at that inaccurate assessment.

“Don’t give me that look,” Ben says. “You’re not exactly known for being fun and cuddly, are you?”

He’s right. My reputation as a fierce and loyal person is just as rampant as the ones that make people fear

As an alpha you’re not only responsible for leading your pack, you’re responsible for keeping them safe and sometimes that means having to make decisions others will never have to.

“She didn’t know if you were like all the other Alphas. If you would demand she leave her home and relocate as soon as possible.”

I roll my eyes before I can stop myself. “I’m not- I would never push her into something like that. I respect the wishes of females.”

Tessa’s eyebrow arches. Her green eyes are like a hawk, so unmoving that it feels like she is seeing my thoughts.

She leans forward, just slightly, enough to make it feel like a challenge. “You think your Alpha nature doesn’t crave being near her? Doesn’t want to pull her close and keep others away from her? Do you think

if she asked, you could have stayed away? And if so for how long, a week? A month? A year? More?”

I open my mouth to deny it. Close it again.

The female has a point, my wolf says.

You know she’s speaking about your lack of control, right?

She speaks of us, my Lycan says smugly. We are one.

Asshole.

If a wolf could snicker, mine would be.

She gestures toward me. “From what I can see, you’re already trying to stake your claim.”

That statement hits harder than I expect.

I glance down at my hands, knuckles white on the table.

She’s not wrong.

I think of the way I’ve been acting, Hope. Devising ways to be close to her. The spikes of jealousy and those of her belongings to me. My determination to get her to admit to a bond she clearly wasn’t to pretend doesn’t exist.

My voice is low when I speak. “You’re right. I hate it, but you’re right.” I exhale, drag a hand through my hair. “It’s not an excuse, but it got worse when i thought she was with Ben. Like lighting a match and throwing it on gasoline.”

Tessa nods. “Not her smartest plan. She knows better than to tempt an Alpha’s instincts.”

I turn to Ben. “Why? Why lie about it? Why not just say she wanted time? That she wanted to get to know me first?”
