“Best not to lie so well, stick as close to the truth as possible. I was visiting your territory for medical treatment, took a liking to Hope, and decided to officially court her.”

His eyes pinned mine again.

“Are you just looking for an excuse to be seen with me?” 1 tease.

Delight flashes in his eyes as he takes my time. “Just a bit of forethought. How else would I explain

my reluctance to allow other males close to you?”

“You could always say we’re best friends,” I quip.

His eyes flash to his Lycan, and the heat in them makes my toes curl.

“Not with the way he looks at you,” Tessa murmurs.

“Hey!” I elbow her.

“Your sister is right, bug,” Papa says, “Any male with half a set of brain cells will feel his wolf claim on you.”

My face flames. “Okay, that’s enough. We have our plan, now let’s move on.”

Tessa and Ben snicker.

Keith flashes me a cocky smile, smothered with fake innocence.

My heart kicks once, then again. A warm buzz spreads through my chest like sunlight slipping in through a crack in the window. I don’t even realize I’m holding my breath until I force myself to look

away.

Stupid handsome face.

“Are you sure your pack will be alright with you away for this long?” Papa asks.

Keith shrugs. “I extended my stay. Figured if Hope and I are going to ‘take things slow, might as well give it time to mean something.”

My stomach flips. Not sure if it’s the way he says it-calm, easy-or the fact that everyone else in this car just heard him say it.

Tessa se

things slow, huh?”

Dad doesn’t say a word, but I can feel him thinking about a lot of things.

Keith chuckles, leaning back in his seat. “What? It’s not a crime to get to know someone. Especially when someone nearly broke my ribs during a training match.”

I have to fight not to smile. Yesterday, Tessa goaded Keith into sparing me. Needless to say, he underestimated me.

I roll my eyes. “You tripped over your own ego.”

“And yet, here I am. Still chasing after it.”

That earns a laugh from my dad, which somehow makes it worse.

Or better.

I’m not sure.

There go his eyes again. Like he can’t bear to have me out of his sight, like I’m the only thing capable of capturing his attention.

I’m not used to this. The attention without pressure. The comfort without conditions. It’s unsettling in the quietest way, like standing still in deep water.

Tessa sighs beside me. “Can we stop for food? I haven’t eaten since breakfast.”

“We just passed a gas station,” I point out.

“I’m not eating gas station sandwiches the night before I walk into the most important meeting of my life.”

Dad sighs. “Fine. We’ll stop at the first dinner we see when we hit the next town.”

“Thank the goddess,” Tessa mutters, already scrolling for options on her phone.

My eyes are the ones that search for Keith this time. The blue in them seems to blaze and shift. This time, I don’t look away. I just sit there, letting the warmth pool between us.
