8. Unexpected reunion–1

Papa’s essence prods along our pack link. The gentle push telling me he’s searching for me, trying to figure out how close I am.

Each Alpha shares a pack link with all pack mates. With it the Alpha has the ability to tap into that link and get a sense of our emotions and how close or far we are to him.

It’s a link that connects us all.

It soothes our wolf and provides a sense of peace and comfort to our elemental sides while also ensuring the Alpha can perform his main role which is to protect the pack.

“Uh oh. Someone anxious to see you.”

I snort. “You mean you’re anxious to play host. Knowing Papa Karen was probably up all

morning making calls to make sure everything is perfect for Alpha Keith’s arrival.”

‘Someone’s bitter today,” Ben mumbles.

“Look who’s talking. With your face is puckered I could have sworn Alpha Keith traveled all this way with the sole purpose of sweeping Tessa off her feet,” I sass.

Ben’s blush reaches his ears. “I’m not- I don’t…It isn’t-”

Despite my annoyance at Keith’s arrival, I recognize this is the perfect time to push these two together.

“Cut the shit. It’s me you’re talking to. And for as long as I’ve known you you’ve loved Tessa.”

For a moment Ben is stunned into silence.

“It won’t work,” he says so low I almost missed it.

“Why?”

“She doesn’t like me like that, and I won’t ruin our friendship due to one–sided feelings,” he says stubbornly.

“What if I told you she did,” I venture.

“How do you know?

“She’s my sister. I know. The question is what are you going to do about it.”

I can see the roof of the main house up ahead and my heart quickens.

My wolf peeks her head up, becoming more aware of our surroundings.

It’s okay girl. Well, get through this, I soothe her.

“What can I do,” Ben says.

I hate the defeat in his voice, so I reply the one thing I know is true. “You can make her happy,

Ben.”

We arrive at the house and before Ben turns to leave, I say, “Think about what I said.”

He doesn’t answer but he will.

When I twist the doorknob and entire my house the air feels heavier. Or maybe that is just the resentment taking root in my chest.

Voices come from the living room, the murmurs, low and polite.

Papa steps out of the room, eyes smiling like they are every time he sees me. “There you are.

I was starting to wonder if you were going to play hooky.”

I have to put effort into acting normally. “Hey Papa. Sorry I was with Emma.”

“What a coincidence. That was just the person Alpha Kieth wanted to see.”

“Oh,” I say dumbly as Papa leads me into the living room.

I want to turn and run as far away from the house as I can. Emma’s words keep me moving forward.

You are strong.

I am.

I can do this.

I keep my face trained into a neutral expression as I take in Karen, Leah, Tyler, and Tessa on the left side of the room.

Papa steps aside for an introduction. “Hope, meet Alpha Keith of the Lotus Pack.”

His scent assaults me first.

The dark cedar and firewood with a hint of rain teased my olfactory. It sparks hundreds of memories of slow passionate nights and whispered promises.

Of pain.

Betrayal.

My wolf retreats her conflicting emotions battling with the elemental instinct to claim her

mate.

Keith stands from the sofa, and his appearance is the sweetest torture. Dark thick hair, eyes so blue the color almost disappears when the light catches it.

Fuck, I hate that seeing him can make me feel this way.

“Alpha Keith, let me just apologize again for my earlier absence at your ascension. My sister needed me,” I say proud of the even tone in my voice.
