Dario kept his hand on the small of my back, his thumb rubbing a slow circle against my shirt. The black van carrying Nysa had already turned the corner and disappeared down the street, leaving nothing behind except the hum of the car engines from the security details my dad brought along. The air outside felt sharp, and I pulled my jacket tighter around myself, trying to shake off the lingering weirdness of watching my own sister get hauled away by the same men she had hired.

Dario looked down at me, his face tight. "Let's go home, Kitten. You've had enough excitement for one morning." he said.

I shook my head, stepping out from under his hand. "No. I'm not going back to the home yet. I need to go see Carlton."

He frowned, crossing his arms. "You want to go talk to him right now? After all that?" he asked.

"Yes," I said, meeting his eyes. "I need to check in on him. Make sure he's settled before everything else drops."

My dad stepped up beside Dario, his eyes fixed on me with that heavy, overprotective look , like I had decided to do something stubborn. He didn't yell or try to argue me down, which was weird. He just stared at me.

"You can go," Dad said slowly, his voice dropping into a flat tone, that meant he meant business. "Only if security goes with you. Every step of the way." he said.

I let out a breath and nodded. "Fine. Deal."

Dario didn't look happy about it, but he knew better than to push when I got like this. He just kissed the top of my head and told me to text him the second I walked through the door.

The drive over to the Vexari house didn't take long. Two cars full of my dad's guys trailed right behind me the entire way, making sure nobody tried anything stupid. When we pulled up to the front, the place looked quiet, almost normal, which felt weird considering everything spinning around in my head.

I walked up the front steps and knocked. A second later, the door swung open, and Carlton was standing there. His face instantly lit up, a warm, tired smile breaking out across his face as soon as he saw me.

"Nyxara," he said, sounding genuinely happy. "What are you doing back here so soon? I thought you were meeting your sister for coffee."

"Coffee?, Dad I don't know about that, no one mentioned it to me, especially Nysa," I said looking confused.

“That damn girl,” he said shaking his head.

“Whats going on?”

“She left saying she was going to meet you for coffee to apologize, that was the only reason I let her out of this compound, lord knows where she has run off to now and what trouble she will cause” he said with a sigh.

I offered him a small, easy smile as I stepped inside.

“She probably wanted to go meet her friends, beside I told you I was going to visit today.”

He shut the door behind me and led the way into the living room. It was quiet, the kind of quiet that felt heavy instead of peaceful. He pointed to the sofa, and we both sat down.

"How are things over at the Valteri house?" he asked, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees. "Are they treating you well? If anyone is giving you a hard time, you tell me." he asked.

I couldn't help the little chuckle that slipped out. It was sweet, in a sad kind of way, that he was sitting here worrying about me when he had no idea what kind of people he was sharing a roof with.

"They're treating me really well," I said, keeping my voice light. "Dario's family is... intense, I guess is the word, but they're good to me. Elena and grandmother are already driving themselves crazy planning."

He let out a soft breath of relief, nodding to himself. He reached out to grab something on the coffee table, but then his eyes caught my left hand resting on my knee and he froze.

His gaze locked onto the diamond sitting on my ring finger. Slowly, his hand reached out, his fingers gently wrapping around my wrist. He pulled my hand closer, staring down at the ring with wide, disbelieving eyes.
