471 A Flicker of Life
Third-Person POV
Once Aubrey’s silhouette vanished through the opening, the rope was swiftly pulled back up, and Alpha Henry climbed out with urgent haste.
Nearby, medical personnel had already begun their work. Someone gently dabbed Aubrey’s face with warm water, carefully removing the mud that had clogged her mouth and nostrils. They wrapped her in a thick blanket and positioned a large heat lamp above her, bathing her in a comforting red glow. The soft raindrops continued to fall, their shimmer magnified by the lamp’s warm light. The rain had eased to a gentle drizzle. And through it all, she remained—still here.
Though Alpha Henry’s heart ached to rush forward and hold her, he restrained himself, unwilling to disrupt the medics as they fought to save her. She was in shock, fragile and vulnerable. Even a moment’s hesitation could cost her life.
He grasped Aubrey’s icy hand in his own, rubbing it fervently in an attempt to bring warmth back to her skin, but it remained cold and unyielding. His gaze drifted down to her wrists, where he noticed jagged wounds dotted with silver fragments that burned her flesh. She had never confided this pain to him.
A heavy wave of sorrow crashed over him, squeezing his chest painfully. His eyes reddened as he stared at her motionless form, feeling as though his heart was fracturing into pieces. Aubrey had always been so resilient—so unbreakably strong—that seeing her like this tore him apart.
Because of the suffocating mud she had swallowed, the rescue was made all the more difficult. To help her breathe, the medics made a small incision just below her throat, inserting a tube into her windpipe to administer artificial respiration.
Though their skill was undeniable, a faint trickle of blood seeped from the incision, making her pale, mud-streaked face look even more ghostly—like a lifeless figure.
Alpha Henry swallowed a sob, unwilling to let his despair show. He squeezed her hand gently, closed his reddened eyes, and pressed a trembling kiss to her fingertips.
Softly, almost as if speaking to the moonlit sky, he whispered, “You always said I was the lucky one, that the Moon Goddess smiled upon me, that I could have anything I wanted… If that’s true, if I really am favored, then you have to wake up. The only thing I want for the rest of my days is you.”
The mud was slowly cleared away from her face, but her eyes remained shut. Just as the medics began to lose hope, Aubrey’s hand—the one Alpha Henry held tightly—twitched ever so slightly, tapping his palm like a faint echo in the darkness.
“There’s a heartbeat! Keep up the oxygen, continue clearing!” a medic shouted, urgency returning to the room.
Alpha Henry knew in his heart this was a miracle—a gift she had given him.
She had achieved her revenge and gained the recognition she sought. She had no regrets left. The only thing anchoring her to this world was him. As a blessing, she chose to stay.
Once the doctors finished treating her wounds, Alpha Henry cradled Aubrey gently in his arms, as tenderly as one might hold a fragile newborn.
Under the soft drizzle, surrounded by scattered equipment and mud, the onlookers watched the pair in silence. Something deep within them stirred, a quiet, unshakable emotion that lingered long after the rain had softened.
After a moment, someone sighed softly, “I remember hearing that Ms. Mary carries the bloodline of the ancient werewolves. Maybe… just maybe, it isn’t impossible for her to marry the Alpha.”
