Fiona still could not take that on faith.

After a brief pause, she asked, "The one investigating Cierra... was it Zephyr?"

Morgan shook his head.

"That part doesn't worry me," he said. "For your sake, that person wouldn't touch her."

Fiona stilled for a beat.

That would only pile more pressure onto the emperor and make things easier for Soren.

So the two of them had struck some kind of deal in private.

"If Lord Soren is willing to help, that's still a good thing," Fiona said.

"He's not helping me because he wants to," Morgan said. "He's trading with me because he doesn't want Zephyr setting his sights on you."

Fiona lowered her eyes.

That explained why Marcus had written to tell her to return to Jexburgh. He was probably thinking the same thing her father was—that if Zephyr went to Southmere, he might make a move on her there.

Morgan looked at her.

"The reason I had you return to Jexburgh really was partly because he asked me to make sure you stayed safe," he said. "But there's also something I need you to do.

Right now, you still can't refuse Zephyr."

Fiona thought it through, and the answer came fast enough.

Morgan needed her to get close to Zephyr.

Morgan said nothing more.

Out of the corner of his eye, he glanced at the secret letter on the table. After reading it, he forced down the jolt that ran through him and burned the letter to ash.

When Fiona looked up again, Morgan was already gone.

Her thoughts turned at once to what had been in that letter.

It had been about Spencer.

As for why Emperor Aldric had sent Spencer to assassinate Soren, Fiona had already started to touch the outline of it.
