"Between you and me, why be so polite?" Zephyr said softly. "As long as you want to, the Prince's Estate is naturally a place you can enter whenever you please."
Sweet words from a man were worse than poison.
Fiona only smiled and said nothing.
Zephyr still wanted to say more.
When a man got carried away, tender talk slipped out on its own. But before he could go on, someone cut in.
"Ms. Fiona, something's wrong. Selina hurt Mr. Elijah..." The maid rushed in, but the instant she saw Zephyr, she stopped short and changed her tone. "Prince Zephyr."
This was a mess between Elijah and his mistress, and Fiona had no reason to keep it quiet.
"Don't worry," she said. "Just say it."
So the maid told it from start to finish.
Earlier that day, Elijah had secretly gone to see Selina. But for some reason, Selina had taken a hairpin and driven it at him. Luckily, he had thrown up a hand to block it. The hairpin hadn't gone into his chest, but it had pierced straight through his palm.
As for why Selina had done that, Fiona already knew.
It was because she had "accidentally" overheard Elijah's cold, faithless words.
That had been enough to freeze her where she stood.
Selina was currently being "looked after" by the Niven family.
Now that something like this had happened, Fiona, the one who had proposed the arrangement in the first place, naturally had to go take a look.
"I'll go with you, Fiona," Zephyr said.
Thinking of the way Elijah treated people with power, Fiona did not refuse.
By the time the two of them reached the country manor, Elijah was already seated while a doctor wrapped his wound.
Selina was kneeling in front of him, tears streaming down her face. There had still been a trace of softness left in Elijah's eyes, but the second he saw Zephyr, his expression changed.
"Prince Zephyr." Elijah greeted him with a fawning smile.
Zephyr looked at him with a half-smile. "Handle your family matter, Mr. Wagner. I only came because I was worried it wouldn't be safe for Fiona to come here alone, so I figured I'd serve as her personal guard for a bit."
A prince calling himself someone's personal guard made the closeness between them impossible to miss.
There was no way Elijah was going to let a connection like Fiona slip past him.
So in front of Fiona, he made his position clear at once. He didn't even spare Selina another glance. "Your Highness misunderstands. It's nothing more than a little affair between a man and a woman. How could that count as family business? It won't trouble the household at all."
That was his answer to Fiona, plain as day.
Selina tugged the corners of her mouth into a smile.
Whatever was left in her chest turned cold.
Zephyr naturally didn't think much of a common woman like Selina. "Fiona heard you'd been hurt and rushed over right away. Mr. Wagner, you'd better go have the royal physician look at you first."
And of course, the royal physician being here was another favor Zephyr had deliberately arranged.
Fiona pulled her gaze back and didn't stay any longer.
*****
A few days later, Selina was gone from the country manor.
Elijah had already gone on guard. He knew he couldn't keep Selina around any longer, so he bribed someone to get rid of her.
But Selina showed up in court instead and accused Elijah of abducting a common woman by force.
Under Duflana's laws, if a court official did something like that, the punishment was severe.
Elijah had no choice but to ask the Niven family for help. With that accusation hanging over him, he couldn't clear himself no matter what he said, and he hadn't expected Selina to go this far off the rails.
Joanna was anxious too. Her daughter and son-in-law were tied together, and this was no good for her daughter at all.
Fiona only smiled. "Auntie, why don't you go ask Rita what she thinks?"
Rita's attitude turned out to be the same as Fiona's. The Niven family had the power to handle Elijah's mess, so they could leave him hanging for now and let him suffer a while.
He needed to understand exactly who he was relying on for everything he had now.
Besides, if Elijah rose too fast right now, that would be no good at all. Only if he stayed in Rita's control could her days remain peaceful.
People from the Wagner Estate had already come begging her long ago, but Rita kept using the excuse that she hadn't fully woken yet. All she said was, "Breakfast was pretty good today."
By the time Elijah finally saw her, it was already afternoon.
