Fiona thought for a moment, then answered plainly. "She was sold by her parents into that filthy place. I saw how pitiful she was, so I paid to redeem her. She wanted to follow me, but Meryl has always warned me not to go around showing kindness recklessly outside. If I'd brought her back, Meryl would've questioned everything down to the root, so I only gave her some silver and told her to make her own way."

"So that's what happened. You really are soft-hearted," Zephyr said, and left it there.

Then he added, "I'll have my personal guard escort you back."

When she returned to the Niven family, she told Zachary about her conversation with Zephyr.

What she wanted was simple enough: she needed her father to be careful with him.

"Why have you been seeing him so often lately?" Zachary said, his brows pulling together.

He had already started to suspect that his daughter had some other plan behind all this.

"Have you heard about Broadmoor, Father?" Fiona asked.

"It's been pretty unsettled lately," Zachary said.

"Then do you think Zephyr can handle it properly?" she asked again.

"He may be a prince, but his footing in the army is too shallow. He's not like the Fourth Prince, who has General Yeats in his hand. For the moment, I'm afraid Zephyr won't be able to make it happen," Zachary said.

That was exactly why Zephyr had set his sights on Fiona. Prince Jinks' Estate was also close to the Fourth Prince, but his ties with Princess Helen ran deep. If Fiona married Zephyr, then Zephyr would have a chance to draw them over.
