"Who was the person you saved in Southmere?" Zachary suddenly asked.
Fiona lifted her head and met his eyes.
Something in Zachary's face grew more complicated.
His daughter had not saved that man only once. Even in the matter of Alexander, she had done everything she could back then.
No wonder she was so certain Lord Soren would deal with Broadmoor himself.
As for Fiona's visits to the Prince's Estate, there had truly been quite a few of them.
Zephyr was indulgent with her, at least by the standards of his household.
Even the women most favored in the estate had to mind themselves when they ran into Fiona. Every one of them greeted her properly.
The younger dancing girl hadn't believed it at first.
She had never worried about new women showing up around Zephyr. She might not have been the one who shared his bed the most, but she had stayed in his favor longer than any of them.
And when something weighed on him, he would even speak to her about it.
Being favored didn't mean all that much.
But a man willing to open himself up to her—that was different. That was never ordinary.
So she decided to go see Fiona for herself.
The elder dancing girl tried to stop her again and again.
"Roxanne, what are you worried about? His Highness is only dealing with her for profit. As long as I don't go too far, His Highness won't blame me."
The younger dancing girl said.
This was the first time Fiona had seen the younger dancing girl.
She was the beauty Soren had found for Zephyr.
"Your Highness, I made these pastries myself. I brought them for you to try," the younger dancing girl said.
Fiona smiled. "Cousin, you really do keep yourself surrounded by beauties."
She sounded so open and easy about it that something in Zephyr turned sour.
He had wanted her not to be too jealous. But now that she wasn't jealous in the slightest, that didn't sit well with him either.
"None of them can compare to you, Fiona," Zephyr said.
As he said it, he casually ate the pastry the younger dancing girl had lifted to his lips.
Then he looked back at Fiona.
She was still smiling.
There wasn't the slightest sign that she cared.
"You can leave now," Zephyr said, flicking a glance at the younger dancing girl.
"Your Highness..." The younger dancing girl still tried to coax him.
"Leave," Zephyr said with a smile.
The younger dancing girl jolted.
When had he ever truly turned on her before? The tray of pastries stayed in her hands as she walked out, tears already falling.
The elder dancing girl saw her crying and only let out a sigh.
Once Cornelius was dealt with, nobody could say for sure what Zachary's stance would be.
Quentin glanced at Soren, whose expression stayed flat.
Too bad this one had his own designs on Fiona.
That meant Zephyr and Fiona had no chance at all, and even if they somehow did, this man would snuff it out himself.
When Lord Soren first returned to Broadmoor, he hadn't let even the slightest hint leak out.
In secret, he stripped Tristan of power, killed every person Emperor Aldric had sent there, and then buried the whole matter.
It was Quentin's first time seeing Lord Soren act with that kind of ruthlessness.
And even at a moment this critical, while he was cleaning out the opposing faction, he still had the leisure to send people to keep watch on Fiona.
Naturally, Emperor Aldric in Jexburgh couldn't have been completely unaware.
But he had fallen gravely ill, and with Lord Soren still alive, fighting him head-on was no longer a long-term answer.
The failed assassination had already cost him the best chance to deal with him.
On top of that, the Steppe Nomads were stirring again, and there was every chance he might still need Soren.
So even if Emperor Aldric had heard rumors, he chose to shut one eye and leave it at that.
At this point, Emperor Aldric's hope probably rested on Zephyr alone being able to carry the burden.
And if Zephyr couldn't do it, then Emperor Aldric would have no choice but to settle for less and tolerate Soren, this powerful minister, so Duflana stayed secure and he didn't go down in history for losing territory.
Mr. Chambers said, "Prince Zephyr is probably pushing Fiona step by step because he urgently needs help from Prince Jinks' Estate.
"If he goes before His Majesty now and asks to marry her, His Majesty will agree."
