Li Huan was rendered speechless by Zhou Zhao’s antics and threw a fried dumpling at him.
"Stop spouting nonsense!"
Zhou Zhao caught the dumpling with a plate and popped it straight into his mouth.
"We all know the situation with Third Young Master and Miss Lin’s marriage. As long as the Sang Family agrees, Miss Lin won’t have a choice, even if she’s against it. But Miss Lin’s current state seems like she’s been brainwashed, so you’d better be cautious."
Chen Jin and Li Huan, having witnessed Sang Ran’s stubbornness before, nodded in agreement.
At that moment, both Chen Jin and Zhou Zhao’s phones rang simultaneously.
It was news from the media.
After reading his phone, Zhou Zhao looked up at Chen Jin. "Same news?"
Chen Jin read aloud, "Mr. Sang accompanied his fiancée to Gang City."
The photo used was astonishingly over three years old, showing Sang Li and Lin Zhiyi together.
Li Huan asked in confusion, "What does this mean? Are they trying to hype up Lin Zhiyi?"
Chen Jin and Zhou Zhao exchanged a glance and promptly stood up. "This is likely not so simple."
After saying that, the two men left.
Li Huan shrugged and resumed eating breakfast.
But just as he was about to take a bite, Chen Jin turned back, grabbed him, and dragged him away.
Liao Yi walked in with his food. "Why did everyone leave? Looks like I’ll be eating alone."
...
Lin Zhiyi had just put on her coat and stepped out of the bedroom when the doorbell rang.
She saw Gong Chen playing with Xingxing in the bathroom sink and decided to check the door herself. Through the peephole, she spotted Li Huan and Chen Jin.
Only after confirming it was them did she open the door.
The two greeted her briefly before hurriedly entering the apartment.
Gong Chen emerged holding Xingxing and glanced at Chen Jin. "What’s going on?"
Chen Jin handed over a tablet. "Mr. Sang and Miss Lin’s whereabouts have been posted online, but the source seems to think the two are traveling together on business."
"Are paparazzi so idle these days? Reporting on fiancés traveling together? It’s not like they’re having an affair." Li Huan muttered under his breath.
His words made Gong Chen’s brows furrow deeply.
"I’m afraid this is only the appetizer."
Chen Jin immediately grasped his meaning and said worriedly, "Third Young Master, you must avoid appearing with Miss Lin for the time being, especially... the child."
After hearing their discussion, Lin Zhiyi quickly understood the intent behind the report.
The issue wasn’t that she and Sang Li had come to Gang City, but that she was Sang Li’s titular fiancée.
If someone were to uncover any connection between her and Gong Chen, their intertwined relationships would undoubtedly create an uproar.
What’s worse, Sang Li and Gong Chen both had to consider Sang Ran’s health, so the attacks would inevitably shift toward Lin Zhiyi.
She might be able to endure it, but what about Xingxing?
Looking at the innocent Xingxing, Lin Zhiyi couldn’t imagine the burden such a small child would have to bear.
As a mother, she knew she couldn’t face those consequences. Reflexively, she scooped up Xingxing and retreated to her rental residence.
But just as she raised her hand, Gong Chen grasped her tightly.
"I won’t let anything happen to you two."
The scene she had imagined countless times was now unfolding before her, yet the battered and bruised Lin Zhiyi couldn’t bring herself to believe him.
Gong Chen, reading her hesitation, squeezed her hand gently. "I’ll make you believe me."
Lin Zhiyi said nothing, but also couldn’t seem to pull her hand away.
Suddenly, her phone rang.
It was another unfamiliar number.
After answering, she heard Sang Li’s warm voice on the other end.
"Zhiyi, are you alright?"
"I’m fine, just sorry for dragging you into this." Lin Zhiyi apologized.
"I called regarding the online incident. I’ll find the right time to announce that we’ve already dissolved our engagement."
Lin Zhiyi’s heart swelled with words, yet she found herself choking back everything but a simple thank you.
"Thank you."
"Wait a moment." Gong Chen suddenly snatched her phone and spoke to Sang Li himself. "The engagement cannot be dissolved."
"..."
Lin Zhiyi froze, gazing at Gong Chen with tightly pressed lips that conveyed both anger and confusion.
What did he mean?
Was he expecting her to carry around the title of someone else’s fiancée indefinitely, caught in this ambiguous position?
Lowering his voice, Gong Chen murmured something to Sang Li that Lin Zhiyi couldn’t catch.
When the phone was finally returned to her, she felt a tightness in her chest. Taking a deep breath, she scooped up Xingxing.
"We’ll go to the hospital ourselves. I wouldn’t want to trouble Third Young Master—it’s clear we’re not able to appear together right now."
Noticing her unsettled mood, Li Huan shifted the topic. "Let’s head to the hospital first. Third Young Master has already coordinated everything with the director."
"Alright."
When they stepped out of the elevator, Liao Yi rushed over.
"Zhiyi, Zhiyi, are you seriously still Mr. Sang’s fiancée?"
"It’s a long story."
"Where are you guys headed?"
"I’m taking Xingxing for a follow-up exam. You should go back to the room." Lin Zhiyi replied.
"I’ll come too! My car’s in the parking lot, so you won’t need to hail a cab. Besides, I know Gang City’s roads better than you do." Liao Yi volunteered eagerly.
Li Huan was about to decline, but Lin Zhiyi nodded in agreement.
"If there are reporters, Liao Yi’s driving skills might come in handy."
"Hmm." Li Huan sounded half-convinced.
Unexpectedly, the moment they got into Liao Yi’s car, he instructed Lin Zhiyi and Xingxing to duck.
"The car across the street seems to be watching us. Don’t worry, I’ll shake them off."
"You... Ah!"
Li Huan exclaimed helplessly the entire ride. Upon arriving at the hospital, he staggered out of the car, clutching it for support as he dry-heaved.
Glancing at Liao Yi, he muttered through gritted teeth, "Your car puts up with you really well."
Liao Yi patted the hood of his small vehicle proudly. "Of course! I almost became a racecar driver, you know."
Taking a deep breath, Li Huan scanned their surroundings. "Looks like we weren’t followed. Let’s hurry and get the child examined."
Lin Zhiyi nodded solemnly, carrying Xingxing as they prepared to enter the hospital. Suddenly, a voice called out from behind.
"Zhiyi."
"Uncle Du!"
Xingxing instantly wriggled out of Lin Zhiyi’s arms and dashed toward Du Qian.
Du Qian joyfully scooped up Xingxing and spun her around in his arms.
"Xingxing, did you miss me?"
"Yes." Xingxing nodded vigorously.
Li Huan discreetly snapped a photo and hit send.
"Your kid’s about to get snatched away."
