Chapter 122

“Natalia!” Damon’s voice cut through the chaos. A moment later, the weight was lifted off of me, and Damon’s worried face appeared above mine. “Are you hurt?”

I cradled my wrist to my chest, hissing through clenched teeth. “My wrist. I think it’s broken.”

Without hesitation, Damon scooped me up into his arms, ignoring the mud that was covering us both. He whisked me away from the game area and toward the small medical tent that had been set up at the edge of the festival grounds.

The pack doctor looked up as Damon carried me into the tent. Her eyes widened at the sight of my wrist.

“Set her down here,” she directed, patting an examination table.

Damon gently placed me on the table, hovering nearby as the doctor carefully examined my wrist. Her touch was delicate, but I still winced as she rotated the joint.

“Definitely fractured,” she said with a frown. “But you’re not healing as you should be.”

I bit my lip, thinking, “Dammit.” Our kind already had fast rates of healing; the full moon only sped that process up. A wolf of my status with the full moon’s light should have been halfway healed by now, not worsening. My wrist was just turning more purple and swollen by the minute.

Damon and I exchanged a look. We both knew what was causing this.

I sighed, closing my eyes briefly. “I’m on a contraceptive. An herbal one.”

“I see.” The doctor’s frown deepened. “That might explain it. Some contraceptives can dampen your wolf’s abilities, including healing. But this seems extreme. How much have you been taking?”

“Just… more than usual today,” I admitted, avoiding Damon’s gaze. “I took a dose this morning, and I was planning to take another before moonrise.”

“Why would you need such a strong contraceptive?” the doctor asked. “Are you and Alpha Damon trying to avoid pregnancy right now?”

Damon’s face remained stony, his eyes fixed on the tent wall behind me. The tension in the small space was suffocating.

“I just don’t want to get pregnant right now,” I said. “And the full moon makes… desires stronger.”

It wasn’t entirely a lie. The full moon did amplify wolf desires, and pregnancy was the last thing I needed right now. But the doctor didn’t know that it wasn’t Damon’s children who I feared getting pregnant with. It was Andrei’s.

The doctor just nodded, turning her attention back to my wrist. “Well, I strongly advise against taking that second dose. In fact, I’d recommend stopping entirely until your wrist heals. Your wolf is your body’s best healer, and you’re essentially putting her to sleep.”

“I can’t. I need to-”

“Natalia,” Damon cut in. “Listen to the doctor.”

I bit my tongue. The doctor wrapped my wrist tightly in a bandage and gave me a painkiller. “Keep it immobilized. The fracture isn’t severe, but it won’t heal properly if you keep taking that contraceptive.”

Damon helped me down from the table once the doctor was finished. “I’m taking you back to the house,” he said. “You need rest.”

“No,” I said quickly. “I want to go back to the festival.”

He stared at me for a long moment, then sighed. “Promise me you won’t take that second dose.”
