Chapter 132

I know, loves,I said, stroking Max’s hair. We’ll go home soon, I promise. Just a little longer, okay?

They both nodded, although Max still looked troubled. I read them their story, kissed them goodnight, and turned out the light. But instead of leaving, I sat in the rocking chair by the window, watching them fall asleep.

My sweet, innocent children. They deserved so much better than this life of secrets and halftruths I’d given them. How much longer could I keep them hidden? It broke my heart to see them this way, separated from their home. And for what? Because I was afraid of what Andrei might do if he discovered the truth?

He’d been devastated when I told him about losing our baby. The pain in his eyes the morning after the banquet, when I’d blatantly lied and told him I’d aborted our child, had seemed so fucking real.

Whatever else he’d done, whatever lies he’d told, his grief for our child had been genuine. Or at least, it certainly seemed that way.

After seeing that, I couldn’t help but wonderWhat would he do if he knew the truth? That not only had I not lost our baby, but that I’d given birth to twins and kept them from him for five years?

Would he try to take them from me? Would he hurt them to punish me for my deception?

Or would he just be happy that his children had survived?

Maybe it was time to investigate Andrei more thoroughly, to see if he could be trusted with the most important secret of my life. Maybe then I could tell him everything.

But I would need proofconcrete, irrefutable proofthat the twins would be safe. Not just from Andrei, but from Lilith, too.

It wouldn’t be easy. Andrei was guarded and suspicious. Getting close enough to gauge his true character would be a delicate balancing act.

But for the twins, I would do anything. Even face the man who had once ordered my death.

As I looked at my sleeping children, I made a silent promise. I would find a way to bring them home safely. And if that meant eventually telling Andrei the truth, then I would prepare for that too.

For now, though, they were safe. Hidden away in this quiet cottage with people who loved them. That would have to be enough.

I spent a few more days at the cottage, soaking up every moment with the twins. But eventually, duty called Damon and me back to Ashmoor. There were pack matters to attend to, and the Moonshadow warriors were still training our guards.

Finally, after a tearful goodbye filled with promises, we pulled up to the pack house. As Damon parked the car, I noticed unusual activity near the training grounds. A crowd had gathered, and I could hear the cheering and shouting even with the car windows rolled up.

Curious, Damon and I made our way toward the commotion. As we got closer, I could see what had drawn the crowd: a sparring match. And not just any sparring match. Andrei was in the center of the ring, facing off against

one of our best warriors.

The Ashmoor warrior was already bloodied, panting hard as he circled Andrei. But Andrei looked barely winded. He was toying with the warrior, I realized. Prolonging the fight for his own amusement. Even the sweat glistening on his bare, golden torso looked artfully placed, not from exertion but rather painted there by an invisible brush.

Suddenly, Andrei lunged forward and his fist connected with the warrior’s jaw. The Ashmoor wolf crumpled to the ground and tapped out.
