Mila watched me with a sharp gaze, no doubt noticing my discomfort. “Maybe,”
I took a long sip of my drink, using the moment to compose myself. “Thank you for telling me. And for meeting
me.”
“That’s not all you wanted to ask, though, is it?” She tilted her head. “Come on, Natalia. I know you, even after all this time. Out with it.”
I hesitated, then decided to just go for it. “Do you think Andrei would try to hurt me? Physically, I mean.”
The question seemed to surprise her. “Hurt you? Why would you ask that?”
I stared down at my drink, debating how much to tell her. Mila had been a Moonshadow Delta for years. She was bound to Andrei. He was her Alpha.
But she had been my friend once. Best friend.
I had to tell someone. And it had to be her.
“I never told anyone what really happened,” I finally said. “Why I disappeared.”
Mila’s eyebrows shot up. “I’m listening.”
And so I told her everything–the car crash, the twins, the rogues who had attacked me, the symbol of the wolf’s head. Everything. Every little detail.
“I had to disappear,” I finished. “I had to protect myself and my children. So I changed my name, hid my twins away, and now I’m fucking drowning again because I know I can’t keep them hidden forever anymore and I don’t know what to do.”
The words all spilled out in a rush. I flicked my gaze up to Mila, but her expression was unreadable. I swallowed hard, hoping I hadn’t just burned my last bridge.
“That’s a serious accusation,” she finally muttered, staring into her drink. “Arranging the murder of one’s mate is akin to disrespecting the Moon Goddess herself.”
“I know. That’s why I need to be certain before I tell him about the twins. If there’s any chance that he might be as dangerous as I think, I can’t reveal them. But if I’ve been mistaken all these years…”
”
Mila drummed her fingers on the table, thinking. “I watched Andrei grieve for you, Natalia. He was… destroyed. Wouldn’t eat, wouldn’t sleep. Spent months hardly leaving the house. I don’t know if he’s that good of an actor.”
I didn’t know how to respond to that. I recalled all too well the horrified look in Andrei’s eyes during my ” funeral“. But in my head, he had been grieving his heir, not me. Even now, I wasn’t certain if he really gave a damn about me or if he was just pissed that something that belonged to him had gotten away.
Finally, Mila nodded. “I’ll look into it. Discreetly. See if there’s any trail that might lead back to Andrei or Lilith. But honestly, I don’t believe he would have hurt you or your children. Not the Andrei I know.”
With that, she downed the last of her drink and stood. “We should get going. People are starting to stare.”
I nodded, watching as she disappeared into the crowd. Once she’d been gone for a few minutes, I left a wad of cash on the table and slipped out.
The next few weeks were a special kind of hell. Andrei’s cold treatment continued during our training sessions with no signs of letting up. He drove me to my limits and then pushed me beyond them, all with that hateful, detached look about him that made me feel like a bug squashed beneath his shoe.
