Chapter 137
Natalia
The next morning, I woke to find a small folded note slipped under my door. The handwriting was familiar. “Message received. Meet me at Crescent Moon Tavern, 11 PM tonight. Come alone. -M”
Mila had responded faster than I’d expected. I tucked the note into my pocket, wondering what she knew that would prompt her to schedule a meeting so quickly. The Crescent Moon was in neutral territory, about twenty minutes from Ashmoor’s borders–far enough to be discreet, but not so far that it would raise suspicions if I was spotted.
It was busy when I arrived later that evening, packed with wolves from various territories looking for a neutral place to drink and socialize. I scanned the crowd, searching for Mila’s familiar face.
I spotted her in a dark corner booth, nursing a glass of rum and soda. She’d cut her hair since I’d last seen her, the dark strands now cropped close to her scalp. It suited her, making her sharp features even more striking. “Natalia,” she breathed as I took a seat across from her. But then she furrowed her brow. “Or… You are going by Natalia now, right?”
“Yes,” I chuckled. “But you’re welcome to call me ‘conniving bitch‘ or ‘liar‘ or whatever you want.”
Mila’s eyes twinkled mischievously. “Tempting, but I think I’ll stick with Natalia. It’s a name I missed saying.”
I squeezed her hand, and she squeezed back, and then we sat in silence for a few minutes. The years had created some space between us, but the atmosphere wasn’t uncomfortable. There was just so much to catch up on that I wasn’t even sure where to begin.
Mila took a sip of her drink and finally muttered, “You look like shit.”
I snorted. “Thanks. It’s been a rough few days.”
“Yeah. Alina told me Andrei has been running you ragged with all the training.” She signaled the waitress for
another drink.
“I was actually hoping you’d know why,” I said, leaning in. Has he been acting differently at home?”
Mila’s eyes narrowed slightly. “Yeah, he’s been… off lately. Hardly sleeping, according to some of the other pack members. Even more of a hardass than usual.”
So it wasn’t just with me, although I still figured he was being even more aggressive around me. “When did it start?” I asked.
She considered the question, swirling her drink thoughtfully. “Hard to say exactly. It’s been building gradually since the banquet. But it definitely got worse after the full moon festival at Ashmoor.”
My stomach clenched. So it was about the “abortion“, and the full moon likely made it worse. The night was such a blur, but I vaguely remembered running into him just moments after I’d gotten off the phone with the twins.
Did he know something about them? If he did, though, why would he act like an ass and not just confront me about it? That wasn’t like him.
“Has he said anything?” I asked. “About me, I mean?”
Mila’s lips quirked up. “Not directly. As you well know, he’s not exactly the type to pour his heart out. But…” She hesitated, then said, “There’s been some gossip going around. About him and Lilith.”
“What kind of gossip?”

“Lilith’s been seen taking some kind of special medication The kind that’s supposed to increase fertility.” Mila pursed her lips. “Some people are saying they’re trying to have a baby.”
The news hit me like a punch to the face. A baby. Andrei and Lilith were trying to have a baby.
