Chapter 140

The fight was brutal but surprisingly coordinated. Despite the tension of the past few weeks, it seemed the training had paid off after allthe three of us moved together seamlessly, covering each other’s flanks, herding the rogues into vulnerable positions. Between the three of us, the rogues were outmatched.

Or so I thought.

I had just taken down a third rogue when the hair on the back of my neck stood up. Pure instinct made me drop and roll, narrowly avoiding a massive weight that crashed down where I’d been standing.

I scrambled to my feet, knives at the ready, and found myself facing the largest of the roguesthe same one who had pinned me in the forest that day. His lips pulled back in a snarl, revealing sharp white canines the size of my forearm.

I didn’t waste a moment. I lunged forward, feinting left before spinning right, slashing across his flank with one blade. But he was faster than I expected for his size, jerking back just enough that the cut was shallow.

He came at me then, his size and speed forcing me on the defensive. He was strong, far stronger and larger than I could ever be, and I didn’t have a chance to shift. But I was faster, always managing to dance just out of reach, using the techniques Alina and Andrei had drilled into me.

For a brief moment, I thought I had the upper hand. I’d managed to open a gash across his chest and another on his back leg which slowed him down.

But then I made a mistake. I stepped back to avoid an attack and felt my ankle twist on a rock I hadn’t noticed. I stumbled.

The momentary falter was all he needed. He slammed into me, sending me sprawling. Pain and bright light exploded through my head as I hit the ground hard. Before I could recover, he was on me. He had shifted during my fall, and now his massive hand was closing around my throat.

I’m going to enjoy this,he hissed, his weight crushing the air from my lungs. Should have finished you in the forest.

Black spots danced at the edges of my vision as I struggled for air. My right arm was pinned beneath his knee, but my left was free. With the last of my strength, I drove my remaining knife up and into the side of his neck.

His eyes widened in shock. His grip on my throat loosened just enough for

me to suck in a desperate breath. Blood poured from the wound, hot and thick, soaking my hand and arm. He was mortally woundedhe had to be, with a knife buried that deep in his neck.

But he wasn’t dead yet. And in his dying rage, he seemed determined to take me with him. His hands found my throat again, squeezing with renewed fury.

I was about to twist the knife and finish him off when a blur of black fur launched over me. Andrei’s wolf form slammed into the rogue, tearing him away from me. There was a sickening crunch as powerful jaws closed around the rogue’s throat, just above where my knife still protruded.

One violent shake, and it was over. The rogue’s body went limp, dead eyes staring up at the clouds.

I pushed myself up to my hands and knees, coughing and gasping for air. My throat felt like it had been crushed, but I could inhale. There would be bruises tomorrow, but nothing worse than that, thankfully.

Andrei shifted back to human form, splattered with blood. But instead of checking if I was okay, he rounded on me with fury in his eyes.

What the fuck was that?he snarled. You nearly got yourself killed!
