The boy wiped his nose with the back of his hand. We were sleeping with Mommy. Then there was a loud noise, like glass breaking. A big man in black clothes came through the window and grabbed her.

My blood turned to ice. Rogues. It had to be.

Mommy fought him,Jane added between sobs. She scratched his face real bad. But then more men came, and they put something over her mouth that made her go to sleep.

She yelled at us to get help,Max continued. That’s when wewe changed. I don’t know why. It just happened. We knew we had to come here.

Their first shift. At fourno, five years old. That was almost unheard of. The trauma of seeing their mother kidnapped must have triggered it, and their wolves must have led them here on instinct, toward home. Toward Damon. Or perhapstoward me. Their father.

Where’s Grace?Damon asked.

The twins just exchanged wideeyed looks. Damon cursed under his breath.

I was already moving toward the door, but small fingers wrapped around my hand, stopping me. I looked down to find Jane staring up at me with those familiar green eyes.

Are you going to save our mommy?she asked.

Yes,I choked out. I’m going to bring her home.

Behind her, Max just glared at me with narrowed eyes.

The drive to the cottage where Natalia had been staying felt like it took forever, even though Damon was pushing his car well past the speed limit. My mind was racing with so many different thoughts the entire time: those children. Natalia. Masked men. Rogues. Danger.

Were those really my children? I didn’t have time to think about it yet. All that mattered to me, and my wolf, was protecting Natalia.

I wouldn’t grieve for a second time. I wouldn’t let it be real this time.

As we pulled up to the cottage, I noticed that the door was hanging open on its hinges. Damon and I burst inside, where we heard small whimpers coming from one of the bedroom closets. We raced over and yanked the door open, finding the nanny curled up on the floor, her wrists and ankles bound and a gag in her mouth.

Thank the Goddess, she breathed when Damon pulled away the gag. The childrenare they-

Safe,Damon assured her, cutting through the rope that bound her hands. What happened?

Six of them, maybe seven, she said, wincing as I helped her sit up. They broke into the house around three in the morning. I heard Natalia fighting like hell, but they had somethingchloroform, I think. Once she was unconscious, they justtook her.

My fists clenched so hard my knuckles cracked. Did you recognize any of them?

Grace shook her head. Rogues, based on their scent. That’s all I know. They knocked me out when I ran into the

room and I woke up like this. The last thing I saw was Natalia being taken.

1 exchanged a look with Damon. Were these rogues connected to the ones we’d killed at the farm? Was this retaliation of some kind?

While Damon helped Grace to the living room, I moved through the cottage, cataloging the damage. The bedroom window was shattered, glass scattered across the floor. There were signs of a struggleoverturned furniture, red droplets on the carpet.

But underneath the scents of rogues and blood, I could still smell her. Natalia.

I followed the familiar scent trail to the window, then outside. The rogues had been smartthey’d approached from the woods, staying downwind. But they couldn’t hide their retreat.

Damon,I called. I’ve got something.

He appeared at my side immediately. What is it?
