Chapter 147

The metal shackles had rubbed my wrists raw by the second day. Every movement sent fresh waves of pain shooting up my arms, but I’d learned to grit my teeth and bear it. Complaining would only give these bastards more satisfaction.
“Get up, prisoner,” the scarred female barked, kicking me swiftly in the ribs as she unhooked my chains from the post. I clenched my jaw against the pain, refusing to show how much that kick hurt. “Breakfast won’t make itself.”
I pushed myself to my feet, ignoring the jeers and chuckles from the other rogues as I limped over to the fire pit.
Two days of sleeping on hard ground with my hands chained above my head had left me stiff and aching, and the female rogue loved to rough me up every time she came to release me for my “chores“. Nothing healed, either, because they kept drugging me every night to make me sleep, which made my wolf too lethargic to do anything.
The rogues had turned me into their personal servant. Cooking their meals over the open fire pit, washing their filthy clothes, cleaning up their disgusting living areas. It was degrading, but it also gave me a chance to observe them.
And what I’d observed was troubling.
These weren’t typical rogues. Most rogues were lone wolves–outcasts who’d been banished from their packs or chosen to leave pack life behind. They were usually disorganized and territorial, more likely to fight each other than work together.
But this group was different. Apparently, they took orders from someone they called “the Boss” or “the Leader“. I’d never seen him personally, but I gathered that he lived in the old farmhouse that stood in the distance.
Despite my pain, I tried my best to file away every detail I could gather. The number of rogues–at least twenty that I’d counted. Their schedules. Their habits. Where they kept their weapons.
Just in case Damon came for me…
No. He would come for me.
The twins had made it to safety. I had to believe that. Max and Jane were smart, and I recalled seeing little fluffy ears poke out from their hair as I’d been taken. They had shifted, hadn’t they?
Surely their first shift had given them the speed and instincts they needed to reach help. They had to have found Damon by now, which meant he’d be looking for me.
He had to be.
“Move faster,” one of the male rogues growled, kicking at my ankles as I stirred porridge in a large pot over the fire. “We don’t have all day.”

She grinned, revealing those rotting forth. “You’ll find out.”
When the sun reached its peak, two large male rogues appeared at my side. They didn’t speak, just grabbed me and dragged me toward the farmhouse, I could smell the rotting wood as we approached, and it was all dark inside except for a single flickering light in one of the windows.
We stopped at a side door, and one of the males knocked twice.
“Come in,” a voice called from inside,
The door created open, and I was pushed inside, the door slamming shut behind me. As my eyes adjusted, I realized I was in the farmhouse’s old kitchen. A folding table sat in the center of the room with two mismatched chairs, and at one of the chairs, sat a man.
