My heart stopped. My children are safe.

Keep telling yourself that.

The world tilted around me. Were the twins in danger? Did he have them in captivity and I just didn’t know it? Had they not made it out of the cottage after all? No. This couldn’t be happening. Not after everything I’d done to protect them.

The wedding will take place tomorrow night,he went on. I suggest you use the time to come to terms with your new reality. All you have to do is behave, and your children will be alright.

Go to hell.

I’m already there, darling. He stood, moving closer to me. He smelled like rot and liquor, and the scent made me want to retch. I flinched away as his large, callused hand reached for my face, but he grabbed a fistful of my hair and yanked me closer.

I spat on his face. He just smiled, his tongue darting out to lick it away from his lip.

Feisty,he murmured. You’ll make good pups.

And with that, he reached beyond me, pulling the door open, and shoved me back outside. The two guards caught me and carried me all the way back to my post, where they chained me up.

Get some rest, the female rogue hissed, pressing the chloroformsoaked rag over my face. You’ll need it for the wedding night.

Andrei

Anything?Damon called from about twenty feet to my right.

Still there,I replied, but the scent was nearly gone by now. The rogues had been smart about covering their tracks, using streams and rocky ground to mask their passage. But they couldn’t completely eliminate Natalia’s scent. Not from me.

We’d been searching for two days straight, stopping only when exhaustion forced us to rest for a few hours before continuing. It was grueling, and I had no idea how she’d been taken so far so quickly, but given the timeline, they’d had about six hours of a head start on us between taking Natalia and the twins making it back to Ashmoor.

I wanted to shift and run fullspeed through the forest, letting my wolf take over completely, to find Natalia. But we might hinder our progress if we moved too quickly. We needed to be stealthy and careful and not let a single clue go unnoticed.

Over here,Damon suddenly called out.

I jogged toward his voice, finding him crouched beside a stream. He was examining something on the ground- a piece of fabric caught on a low branch.

It’s from her nightgown,he said quietly.

The pale blue cotton was torn and stained with what looked like blood. My jaw clenched so hard I thought my teeth might crack.

How long ago?I asked.

Damon sniffed the fabric. Hours. Maybe six or seven.

So we were gaining on them. Slowly, but steadily.

As we continued following the trail, I found myself watching Damon more closely. The man was relentless. He hadn’t complained once about the brutal pace I’d set, hadn’t suggested we stop for more than the bare minimum of rest.

And the way he lookedthere was pain in his eyes. Real pain.

He loved her.

Butthe children. Were they mine or his? The question had been burning in my mind since we began the chase, but now wasn’t the time. Finding Natalia came first. Everything else could wait.
