Chapter 150

Going somewhere?Marcus stood over me, breathing heavily. Blood was streaking down one side of his face, and his stolen suit jacket was ripped.

I scrambled backward, but he was faster. His hand closed around my throat, hauling me to my feet.

Enough!he bellowed toward the fighting, Everyone stop, or the bitch dies!

A cold blade was suddenly pressed against my neck. I could feel it breaking the skin, a thin line of warmth trickling down my throat.

The fighting stopped. Gradually, the wolves shifted back to human form. Damon and Andrei stood about twenty feet away, both bloodied but alive. Several rogues lay motionless around the camp.

That’s better,Marcus said. Now, here’s what’s going to happen. You’re all going to back away slowly, and I’m going to finish what we started here.

Let her go,Damon said. This is between you and us.

That’s what you think,Marcus sneered.

The knife pressed deeper. I could feel blood soaking into the pillowcase.

My eyes found Andrei’s across the distance. For a moment, everything else faded away.

In his face, I saw Max’s stubborn chin. Jane’s determined eyes. My children, who would grow up without their mother if this bastard slit my throat. I wanted to tell him. Goddess, I wanted him to know, wanted him to hear it from me before I was gone.

“Andrei,I whispered, tears blurring my vision, take care of our-

An arrow sprouted from Marcus’s chest before I could finish the sentence. His eyes widened in alarm, the knife dropping from his fingers. He swayed for a moment, then toppled forward. Dead.

I spun around, heart pounding, and saw a familiar figure emerging from the tree line with a bow in her hands.

Mila.

About time someone put that bastard out of his misery, she said, lowering her weapon.

The remaining rogues scattered immediately, disappearing into the forest like the cowards they were. Without their leader, they had no reason to stay and fight.

I ran toward Mila, relief flooding through me. She caught me in a fierce hug, supporting my weight, and for the first time in three days, I felt safe.

How did you find me?I asked.

Followed the trail of destruction these two left behind, she said, nodding toward Damon and Andrei.

Thank you,I breathed. I thought-

me for injury as she whispered, but we need to talk. Privately. Don’t tell him about the twinsShe pressed something into my hand. A folded up piece of paper.

I furrowed my brow and glanced over my shoulder to see Damon and Andrei approaching, Andre’s face inher thunderous. Damon reached us first, pulling me into another hug

Are you hurt?he asked, examining the cut on my neck.

I’m fine. Just ready to go home.

Andrei hung back slightly, his eyes still fixed on my face. There was something in his expression I couldn’t quite read, but when I looked at him, he nodded silently. My wolf, even in her sleepy, druginduced state, wanted to run to him.

And I almost did. My legs began to move in his direction. But then I felt the paper in my hand and stopped

Don’tglancing at Mila. The look in her eyes seemed to say,

We should move,Mila said, clearing her throat as she turned calmly toward Damon and Andrei More magnes might come back with reinforcements.

As we started walking toward where they’d left their vehicleapparently hidden about a mile awayI glanced down at the paper in my hands. It was small and nondescript.
