“Really. Uncle Damon and I will make sure you have fun, and Grace will be there, too.”

The week before the ball was a whirlwind. Jane could barely contain her excitement, tr, chance she got. It was pale pink silk with tiny crystals sewn around the neckline, and she looked like a little fairy princess in it.

Max’s tuxedo was sharp and sophisticated, making him look older than his five years. He grumbled about the bow tie, but even he seemed a little pleased with how grown–up he looked, puffing out his chest with pride as he looked at his reflection.

The night of the ball, I descended the stairs to the foyer in my pale yellow dress. I found Grace standing in the hallway, staring at her reflection. Her dress was deep blue, a color I’d suggested because it brought out her eyes perfectly.

“You look lovely,” I said as I approached.

She turned, offering a small smile. “The dress is beautiful. Thank you for including me.”

“Of course. You’re family.”

Grace shot me a sideways glance, and for a moment, we were silent. Things were still awkward between us sometimes, even after all this time. But thankfully, before things got too uncomfortable, the stairs creaked behind me. I turned to see Damon approaching.

“Are you ready-” he began, but then froze. The tips of his ears turned pink, mouth dropping open like a damn lovesick fool.

But he wasn’t looking at me. He was looking at Grace.

I suppressed a smirk and glanced at her. Her face was beet red, and she quickly cleared her throat and turned away. I winked at Damon, and he just rolled his eyes and brushed past us.

When we arrived at the party, I was admittedly impressed by how Lilith had transformed the Moonshadow estate; she had done a better job than I ever could. Thousands of tiny lights were strung between the trees, elegant tables scattered across the manicured lawns, and there was even a glass dance floor in the center of the gardens, surrounded by vibrant rose bushes and waving wisteria trees.

Jane gasped when we pulled up to the entrance. “It looks like a fairy tale!”

Even Max seemed impressed, although he tried to hide it.

As we stepped out of the car, camera flashes went off immediately. I’d forgotten about the press–the summer solstice ball always attracted media attention, especially when it was being hosted by one of the larger packs.
