Chapter 161
Andrei & Natalia

I was adjusting my cufflinks when my Beta knocked on the bedroom door.
“Come in,” I called.
My Beta stepped inside, bowing his head respectfully. “Alpha, I just got off the phone with the DNA testing center.”
My hands stilled. “And?”
“They said the sample you provided wasn’t sufficient. One hair wasn’t enough to extract a reliable DNA profile. They need more material.”
I bit back a curse. “How much more?”
“Several strands with the root intact, or a cheek swab would be ideal.”
Fuck. Getting one hair from Jane had been easy enough during the carousel ride, but multiple strands? A fucking cheek swab? That would require more planning. More opportunities. And I would have to do it in such a way so as not to alert the twins, because they were certainly smart enough to tell their mother, not to mention the fact that Natalia always had at least one guard watching me during our playdates…
“Fine,” I said, straightening my tie. “I’ll get what they need.”
My Beta nodded and slipped out. After he left, I finished getting ready, my mind already working on how to get closer to the twins again. Maybe another outing. Another game where physical contact would be natural,
I was heading downstairs, mentally preparing for a long night of socializing and dancing and pretending to care about who was marrying who or which pack was allying with which, when I heard retching coming from Lilith’s bathroom. The sound made me pause outside her door.
Another round of violent heaving echoed through the wood.
I knocked softly. “Lilith? Are you alright?”
Silence. Then the sound of running water.
The door opened a moment later, and she appeared in the doorway, face pale and slightly damp from washing. She’d already changed into her gown for the ball–a flowing silver dress that trailed behind her, the color complemented her hair. But with how pale she looked now, it wasn’t the best color for her.
“Are you sick?” I asked.
“Just something I ate, I think.” She waved a hand dismissively, but there was something in her eyes. A glimmer that hadn’t been there before. “Nothing to worry about.”
“Are you sure? You don’t have to attend the ball tonight if-”
“No.” Her response was quick. “I’m the one who organized the ball, so of course I have to be there. Besides…” She smiled, and there was a lift to the corner of her mouth that gave me an uneasy feeling. “There might be more to celebrate than just the solstice.”
The words were like a punch to the gut. More to celebrate.

My wolf stirred uneasily. There was something different about her scent, something subtle that I hadn’t noticed before. Sweeter. Richer.
She was pregnant.
My mind immediately went to that night after the banquet. The night I’d gotten blackout drunk and woken up in her bed. I remembered fragments–her climbing on top of me, her hands on my chest, the taste of her lips. Everything else was a blur, except for waking up in bed with her the morning after, both of us nude.
Had I gotten her pregnant that night?
