Chapter 164
“Lilith,” I said carefully, “we need to discuss what this means.”
“I know exactly what it means.” Her eyes sparkled. “We can finally get married. Maybe even have the wedding before I start showing. An
mn wedding would be lovely, don’t you think?”
“No.”
Her smile faltered. “N
to autumn? Well, we could do it sooner if you prefer-”
“No to the wedding.” I ran a hand through my hair. “Lilith, I’m not marrying you.”
The color drained from her face. “What?”
“I’ll take care of you and the child. You’ll want for nothing, I promise you that. But marriage…” I shook my head.” That’s not going to happen.”
“Are you insane?” Her voice rose. “I’m carrying your child! Your heir!”
“And I’ll acknowledge the child. I’ll provide for both of you. But I won’t marry you just because you’re pregnant.”
“Just because?” She looked like I’d slapped her. “I’m having your baby!”
I flinched, but held my ground. “Yes, and that changes things. But not in the way you think.”
Lilith stared at me for a long moment, her face cycling through disbelief, hurt, and finally settling on fury.
“You bastard,” she hissed, fist clenching. “After everything I’ve done for you. After all these years of waiting for you to get over her.”
“Lilith-”
“No.” She held up a hand, tears of rage starting to spill down her cheeks. “Don’t you dare. I’ve given you everything, and this is how you repay me? You’ll regret this.”
With that, she smoothed her face over and turned on her heel, leaving before I could answer, her silver dress trailing behind her. To anyone else, she just looked like she was sauntering away to powder her nose. But I knew
better.
I watched her go, knowing I should probably follow and try to calm her down. But I couldn’t bring myself to move.
A baby. I was going to be a father.
The thought should have filled me with joy, but all I felt was a hollow ache. This wasn’t how I’d imagined it would happen. This wasn’t the family I’d wanted. The twins…
“Alpha?”
I turned to find my Beta approaching with a cautious look on his face.
“What is it?”
“I have that information you requested. About the nanny. Unless now isn’t the time…”
Right. Grace. I’d almost forgotten amidst the chaos of Lilith’s announcement.
“No, now is the perfect time.” The distraction would be perfect. “What did you find out?”

My Beta glanced around to make sure we were still alone, then said, “It took some work. A few drinks, some charming conversation. The woman seems to be quite loyal to Alpha Damon and Luna Natalia, but…”
