“Just like strawberries for you,” I smiled. “And for Max…” I looked at the boy thoughtfully. “Probably… chocolate chip cookies?”

Despite himself, Max’s expression brightened.

“Where would we go to eat them?” Jane asked.

“Just over there, by the lake. It’s very peaceful, and we can watch the moon’s reflection on the water while we enjoy our treats.”

The lake. Perfect. Deep enough, isolated enough. And if anyone found them, it would look like a tragic accident. Children wandering off during a party, getting too close to the water’s edge. Everyone would blame the whore of a nanny who was probably off fucking Damon behind a bush.

“Can we, Max?” Jane looked at her brother pleadingly.

Max hesitated, still suspicious. But he was only five years old, and the promise of magical chocolate was far too tempting to resist.

“I guess,” he said reluctantly.

“Wonderful!” I stood, tucking the chocolates back into my purse. “Follow me, children. And remember, this is our special secret.”

I slipped away from the main party area, finding a quiet path that led toward the back of the estate. The music and laughter faded behind me, replaced by the sounds of crickets and rustling leaves.

When I used to live here, these gardens had been one of my few escapes. I often liked wandering these pebbled pathways at night when I couldn’t sleep, when the weight of a life with a husband who didn’t love me became too much.

Strangely, after all this time, the gardens still soothed me. But not enough to make up for the turmoil I felt tonight.

Andrei was going to have a baby. With Lilith. The woman he’d always loved, even when he was married to me.

I should have been happy for them. Hell, I should have simply not cared. But instead, I felt hollowed out.

I turned to find Andrei approaching with his hands tucked into his pockets. Of course he’d followed me. And of course he looked stupidly handsome with his black hair pulled back into a neat knot and his suit perfectly tailored to his broad frame.

“Shouldn’t you be with your fiancee?” I asked, looking away. “Celebrating your good news?”

He flinched. “She’s not my fiancee.”

“Well, she will be soon enough. Congratulations, by the way. And I do mean it.”
