“Look, Daddy!” Jane twirled in her dress. “Don’t I look like a princess?”
“Yes, sweetheart. You do.“.
And she did. She really did. I still couldn’t believe that that perfect little girl with her raven hair and big green eyes was my child. Still couldn’t believe that Max, looking like a proud little Alpha in his suit with his bowtie, was my son.
By now, Max’s tears had subsided. Natalia stepped forward. “Kids, why don’t you go see if there are any treats in the kitchen? There might be some cookies left in the jar.” The twins‘ faces immediately lit up and they scampered off, leaving me alone with Natalia and Damon.
“You can’t just show up unannounced,” Natalia growled once the twins were gone. Her eyes flashed dangerously like she was ready to strike at any moment.
I stood slowly, dusting off my pants, and looked at Damon. He had been eerily quiet since I had found out that the twins were mine, which led me to believe that it was Natalia who was the angry one, not both of them.
Why she was angry, exactly, I couldn’t quite tell. I knew she was pissed that I’d taken Jane’s blood for the DNA test, but what was I to do? Natalia clearly had no intention of telling me the truth. Neither did Damon, my own brother. At the very least, I’d thought that he would tell me.
Why had they been so intent on keeping it a secret from me?
“Like I said,” I sighed, “the twins asked me to come. Yesterday, during our visit. They wanted me to see them all dressed up.”
Natalia’s brow furrowed. “They asked you to come? Without asking me first?”
“You didn’t know?”
“No.”
So they’d invited me without clearing it with Natalia first. The realization made me smile. They wanted me here.
“Well,” Damon said, scratching his head, “we’ve got an appointment, so maybe this isn’t the best time for you two to be duking it out over misunderstandings.”
“Clearly,” Natalia sighed. Without another word, she grabbed her purse and swept past me. Damon just shrugged.
“You have to talk to her,” I muttered.
Damon’s lips pressed together. “She’s frightened, Andrei.”
Frustration roiled through me. “Of what? The father of her children who has done nothing except spoil those two kids with gifts and love?”
My brother’s shoulders deflated slightly, and I couldn’t bring myself to stay mad at him, even though I wished he had at least had the decency to tell me the truth.
“Let me just say goodbye to the twins,” I said, stepping past Damon.

I found the children in the kitchen–or rather, I heard them first. Their soft giggles were like music to my ears.
When I peered around the corner, I spotted Max sitting on one of the kitchen chairs, swinging his legs, while Jane stood beside him and poked his knee.
“You’re not really hurt, are you?” she whispered.
He shrugged, puffing out his chest a little. “It hurt a little, but it was worth it.”
Frowning, I stepped into the room. It didn’t take a genius to figure out what was happening here. The twins gasped and whirled around when I cleared my throat, and I folded my arms over my chest, leveling them with a stern glare.
“What did you two have planned?”
Max and Jane looked at each other, little faces reddening. Jane muttered something about having to go, but I stepped in her way before she could.
“Alright,” Max sighed, slipping down from the chair. “We wanted you to come to the photoshoot today. But Mommy said no, so we had to make our own plan.”
“So you staged an injury?”
