The room went dead silent. Every single person in the auditorium was staring at Lilith, who wast standing at the bottom of the stage covered in blood and pointing at my children like they were criminals.

I felt Andrei’s hand tighten around mine for just a second before he dropped it completely. Without hesitation, he yanked off his fox mask and jumped down from the stage, running to Lilith.

“Lilith, what happened? Are you alright?” He reached for her, clearly ready to carry her out of there and get her medical attention.

But she stepped back, shaking her head violently. “No! I’m not going anywhere until everyone knows what those little monsters did to me!”

The crowd was murmuring now, confused and disturbed by the scene unfolding in front of them. Camera flashes were going off everywhere as photographers captured every second of the disaster.

“Lilith, you need a doctor-” Andrei started.

“No. I need justice!” she screamed, her trembling finger still pointed at Max and Jane. “I saw them putting something in the food earlier! Something that made me sick! And now my baby is dead because of them!”

The words hit the crowd like a bomb. Gasps and shouts of shock rippled through the audience. People started turning to look at me and the twins with expressions ranging from horror to disgust.

Eyes wide, I looked down at Max and Jane. They’d both gone pale, too frozen to react to the accusations. Accusations that I knew were false. My children would never poison anyone’s food. They would never hurt a fly!

But try as I might to respond to the accusations, to say that the twins had done no such thing, my voice was drowned out by the growing noise from the crowd.

“Those children poisoned her!” someone shouted from the back.

“How could a mother let her kids do something like that?” another voice called out.

“They must be Andrei’s kids and don’t want to have a little half–sibling!”

The booing started then. A low, ugly sound that made my skin crawl. These people believed Lilith. They actually believed that my five–year–old children had somehow poisoned her and caused her to have a miscarrage.

I scooped Jane up in my arms and grabbed Max’s hand. “We’re leaving. Now.”

But as I turned to carry them backstage, Max twisted around in my grip and pointed directly at Lilith.

“That’s the lady that pushed Jane into the lake!” he shouted, his little voice somehow cutting through all the noise. “That’s the bad lady!”

I froze. Every drop of blood in my body turned to ice as I slowly turned and looked back at Lilith.

For just a moment, her mask of grief and pain slipped. The look in her eyes was pure evil–cold and calculating and vicious. She’d been caught, and she knew it.

Everything clicked into place. The mysterious woman who had lured the twins away with chocolate. The way Jane had almost drowned while Max had just barely escaped. Lilith had tried to kill my children.

Goddess, why didn’t I notice the signed before?

Rage flooded through me like molten lava. I wanted to drop the twins and launch myself at her. I wanted to wrap my hands around her throat and squeeze until she couldn’t breathe, until she felt the same terror my children had felt in that dark water.

But before I could move, security guards appeared from everywhere. Black uniforms swarmed the stage and the audience area.

“Everyone needs to leave immediately,” one of the guards announced through a megaphone. “This event is concluded.”

Two guards flanked me and the twins to escort us out. Another pair moved toward Andrei and Lilith. The crowd was being herded toward the exits, but I could still hear their angry voices, still see them pointing at us as they left.
