“Oh my Goddess,” I whispered. “Max, Jane, what did you do?”
The twins looked up at me with wide, guilty eyes. Jane’s lower lip was already trembling, but neither of them spoke.
Lilith’s smirk grew into an all–out sneer. “See?” she chuckled, although there was no humor in the hateful sound. “I told you those little brats tampered—”
“Wait,” Andrei cut her off and pointed to the screen.
I turned to see what he was pointing at. The footage showed multiple people coming and going from the breakroom, each one taking their own container of food. Many of those people were watching us now and none of them had gotten sick.
And then came Lilith.
All she did was walk in and get a glass of water. She didn’t go anywhere near the box that had been tampered with.
Damon, on the other hand… He grabbed the exact container the twins had sprinkled the substance on and started eating from it. The footage was grainy, but I could just barely make out his name written on the lid as he sat down: Damon.
Lilith suddenly went very quiet. Her smug expression was rapidly fading as she realized what the footage was proving. The children had tampered with the food, yes, but she hadn’t eaten it.
“But–but the water might have-”
“They didn’t touch the water,” I growled, my voice low and dangerous. “Everyone here saw the food they ate. And it wasn’t yours.”
“They must have contaminated the water pitcher earlier, before this footage-”
“No.” I shook my head. “The twins were with me all morning until right before we came here. They didn’t have access to any food preparation areas earlier in the day. The only thing they put anything in was Damon’s food, and you didn’t eat from it.”
The security guard rewound the footage and played it again. There was no denying what we were seeing. The twins had only doctored one serving of food, and it was obviously Damon’s.
Lilith’s face reddened. “Well, how do we know they didn’t think the food was mine? They’re only five. Surely they don’t know how to read.”
I rolled my eyes and grabbed a nearby pen and paper, which I handed to Max. “Max, how do you spell Uncle Damon’s name?”
Max glanced at me uncertainly, and I gave him an encouraging nod. With slightly shaking hands, he wrote it out.
I didn’t need to say more–simply leaned back again and turned my gaze on Andrei, waiting for him to do what
was necessary.
