Chapter 199
Natalia
I woke up slowly and languidly, my cheek warming beneath the morning sun filtering through the tall infirmary windows. The first thing I noticed aside from that buttery sunlight was a solid, familiar warmth pressed against my side and the steady rise and fall of breathing that wasn’t my own.
Andrei.
My cheeks flushed as memories from the night before instantly came flooding back. The way he’d looked at me in the moonlight, the feeling of his hands on my skin, the soft words we’d whispered to each other in the darkness.
After five years apart, we’d finally been together the way we were meant to be. Not desperate and hurried like the night of the banquet or during the full moon, but slow and tender and… perfect.
I shifted slightly, careful not to wake him, and found myself face to face with his sleeping form. Even unconscious, he looked better than he had yesterday. Color had returned to his cheeks, and his breathing was deep and even. The bandage covering his wound was still clean and white–no signs of bleeding or infection.
Goddess, I’d nearly killed him. The memory of that knife sliding between his ribs made my stomach flip with guilt all over again. How could I have been so wrong about him? How could I have let fear blind me to the truth?
Andrei’s eyes fluttered open as if he could sense my stare even in his sleep. When he saw me watching him, a slow smile spread across his face.
“Good morning, beautiful.”
Heat bloomed in my chest at the way he said it, like I really was the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen. “Good morning. How do you feel?”
“Much better.” He reached up to tuck a strand of hair behind my ear, his fingers lingering against my cheek. “ Best I’ve felt in years, actually.”
Before I could respond, the infirmary door swung open. I scrambled to pull the sheet up to cover myself as Grace and Damon walked in, both of them stopping short when they saw us tangled together in the narrow bed.
“Well, well,” Damon grinned, crossing his arms over his chest. “Looks like someone’s feeling better.”
My face burned with embarrassment. “We were just—”
“Sleeping together,” Damon finished. “I can see that. Grace, you might want to check his vitals. I have a feeling his heart rate is elevated.”
“Damon,” I groaned, burying my face in Andrei’s shoulder.
Grace rolled her eyes at her mate but approached the bed with her medical bag. “Alright, you two, let me take a look at my patient.”
I reluctantly climbed out of bed, wrapping the sheet around myself while I hunted for my clothes. Behind me, I could hear Grace examining Andrei’s wound and checking his bandages.

“This is remarkable,” she muttered. “The healing is much faster than I expected, Whatever you two did last night, it worked.”
Damon snorted. “I can guess what they did.”
“Shut up,” I muttered, pulling my shirt over my head.
